Hi!

I have joined this website as my boyfriend Andy has recently been diagnosed with diabetes. He is currently type two but he's been told he's in a 'honeymoon' period and will become type one.

I'm just trying to support him as best as I can through this change!

Welcome to the group, you will get lots of information on here just ask away there's always someone that will be here to answer your questions.

If he's definitely Type 2 - he'll never become Type 1. They are caused by different things and have different effects on our bodies.

Hi Andy/Caroline a warm welcome guys. x

Good afternoon Caroline.

Welcome to the forum.

Bill.

Welcome Caroline.

Type 1 is an autoimmune disease, where your own antibodies destroy your own Beta cells, which are ones responsible for making insulin. When enough Beta cells have been destroyed, you go into crisis and just need to start injecting insulin. Often once the pancreas has the help of the injected insulin the remaining Beta cells get a bit of a rest and then decide to make some insulin now and then (the honeymoon period - No idea who thought up such an inappropriate name for it)

In Type 2 the pancreas is still making insulin but it is not able to make enough for the amount of glucose in their blood (which comes from any carbohydrates that a person eats, or from the liver), or the insulin that they do make does not work well enough.

As Trophywench said they are different conditions. If he has been told he is in the Honeymoon period it sounds like it is more likely to be T1.

Do come back with any questions

Hi Caroline...

I also have been recently diagnosed. To begin with they weren't sure whether it was T1 or T2. To be sure I had blood tests done that were sent away to a lab in Exeter. Takes roughly 4 weeks to get results. Turns out i have Type 1. Maybe something your bf could ask about? This will give definate answers to which type he has if they are unsure. It is a lot to take in & adjust to. I'm still trying to get used to it all. My husband has been a massive support to me. Well done you for being so supportive of your bf too. 🙂
