I'd honestly also advise you to buy yourself a meter and home test Janet. You'll be amazed at what it tells you about your own individual tolerances...medics just don't get this and rely totally on the Hba1c test.
The urine dip sticks are pretty useless too because you'd need to be over 10 I believe for them to register and that's too high.
It's very hard at first but I learned to eat by the meter and found white bread would spike me to the moon but I can tolerate a few chips.
It's sometimes trial and error but you sound determined and that's what matters. Wish you well.
