hello this is my first time and i have a lot of questions for all of you out there, can anyone tell me what is the normal range of blood/sugar levels, i did my home test this morning and it was 8.6 then after lunch i went very shakey and it had dropped to 5.0 is that ok?.
thanks

Hi Christine welcome to the forum.

How long have you been diagnosed? 5 is not too low but if you are a recently diagnosed then your body will be adjusting to the lower levels so will be kicking and screaming for its sugar fix!

Hello Christine and welcome to the forum.

If you are used to high BG levels then it's likely that your body has adjusted to regard those as "normal", hence regards a 5.0 (which is in the standard fasting range of 4-7) as "low". This results in a "false hypo", and a small snack can help calm the symptoms (which can also be caused by a too-rapid drop in BG). In time, with good control, your body will reset its thresholds and you should then only get hypo symptoms when going below 4.

Hi Christine, welcome to the forum 🙂 Have you been diagnosed long? Are you on any medication for your diabetes? How long after eating did you test, and what had you eaten? As the others have suggested, what you experienced sounds like a 'false hypo', where your levels dropped lower than it has been accustomed to.

Please fire away with your questions, we are ready and up to the challenge! 🙂
