Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi to all. I am new to forums and newly diagnosed with type 2 (3 weeks) although have felt unwell for quite a while. Hoping to read and share with like minded people xx

Hi Crazziemomma
Welcome to the forum 🙂. Are you on any medication yet?

Hi Crazziemomma, welcome to the forum 🙂

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, how did it come about? Have you been put on any medication? Don't worry, with the right knowledge and effort it is possible to learn how to control your diabetes well and live a long and happy life in spite of it. Indeed, many people discover that the changes they put in place in order to control their blood glucose levels actually result in them feeling better than they have for a long time, especially pre-diagnosis when things may have been particularly poor - so it's not all bad news, it's an opportunity for you to make those changes for your health that you (like most of us!) have been intending to do for a long time 🙂

Firstly, I would suggest reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter. These are short documents that will quickly get you up to speed with understanding Type 2 diabetes, and the approach you need to take in order to take control. I would also highly recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, an excellent book that has helped many of our members 🙂

I would also suggest starting a food diary, recording in particular the amount (in grams) of carbohydrates in the food you eat each day - not forgetting also, any drinks containing carbs. So, things like bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, any foods containing sugar or flour need to be recorded. Use the information on packaging or weigh other foods and use a book like the Collins GemCalorie Counter . Once you have done this for a couple of weeks you will be able to look fr areas where you might reduce or replace items with more diabetes-friendly things.

If you have any questions, or if anything is confusing or bothering you, please let us know and we will try our best to help out. There are no 'silly' questions, this can be a complex subject and it will take time to get to grips with things - there are no quick fixes - but don't worry, together we can help you to back to health 🙂

a big welcome to the forum 🙂

Lovely to be here...

Thank you so much for the extremely warm welcome. As i said i had been feeling unwell for what seems like forever. Tired, actually exhausted every minute of the day yet wide awake all night. Frequent trips to the loo. Blurred vision and a feeling that my eye was bulging. So i booked an eye test and the Optician said i had Glaucoma and that i needed an urgent referral to a specialist. As you can imagine at 39yrs old i felt devastated. :( In order to get the referral i had to make a GP appointment, i was seen very quickly then one thing led to another and i find myself here, posting on a forum for Diabetes. The day the doctor told me she just said you have Type 2 Diabetes im afraid, make an appointment with the nurse and see her, take these tablets twice a day. That was it. My first appointment with the Diabetic nurse is on Wednesday and i am apparently to have a flu jab. I am currently taking Metformin 500mg twice a day. After reading all peoples threads for the last few days i have started to reduce the carbs in my diet and already feel a little less zombiefied. Thanks guys, just writing this down made me feel better!

There is plenty of support here as you work out how to manage yourself.

Exercise and diet are important, and I think it is helpful to have them in that priority order. Diet won't solve high sugar on its own, exercise is the other half of the plan.

My GP said to me, "they say you should walk 1 mile a day. In my experience it is more like 4." That was a shock, it took me a long time to get my head round what he was saying. I still haven't got my legs round it.

Welcome Craziemomma 🙂
