Hi Crazziemomma, welcome to the forum
🙂
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, how did it come about? Have you been put on any medication? Don't worry, with the right knowledge and effort it is possible to learn how to control your diabetes well and live a long and happy life in spite of it. Indeed, many people discover that the changes they put in place in order to control their blood glucose levels actually result in them feeling better than they have for a long time, especially pre-diagnosis when things may have been particularly poor - so it's not all bad news, it's an opportunity for you to make those changes for your health that you (like most of us!) have been intending to do for a long time
🙂
Firstly, I would suggest reading
Jennifer's Advice and
Maggie Davey's letter. These are short documents that will quickly get you up to speed with understanding Type 2 diabetes, and the approach you need to take in order to take control. I would also highly recommend getting a copy of
Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, an excellent book that has helped many of our members
🙂
I would also suggest starting a food diary, recording in particular the amount (in grams) of carbohydrates in the food you eat each day - not forgetting also, any drinks containing carbs. So, things like bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, any foods containing sugar or flour need to be recorded. Use the information on packaging or weigh other foods and use a book like the
Collins GemCalorie Counter . Once you have done this for a couple of weeks you will be able to look fr areas where you might reduce or replace items with more diabetes-friendly things.
If you have any questions, or if anything is confusing or bothering you, please let us know and we will try our best to help out. There are no 'silly' questions, this can be a complex subject and it will take time to get to grips with things - there are no quick fixes - but don't worry, together we can help you to back to health
