Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1

Hi everyone! Im 29, and was "diagnosed" 5 years ago, but have only recently put my own health first after nursing my mum with terminal cancer, until she passed away in May. I have been put on a regime with a combination of insulin and tablets, and thus far, have managed low double figure reading until we can get some "good" control. This is something I would like to achieve sooner rather than later, as my husband and I would like to try for a baby at some point, and obviously good control is paramount. I would love to hear from anyone really, who can share any experiences of diabetes, as although, as I say I've been diabetic for 5 years, I've only really been looking after myself since May! I've given myself a big slap on the wrist, just glad to be getting some control now.
Look forward to hearing from you
Mel x 🙂

Hi Mel, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your Mum, that must have been hard to cope with, and no real wonder that the diabetes was of secondary importance.

What medication are you on exactly i.e. what insulin and what tablets?

Hi Mel
Sorry to hear about your Mum, that must have been really hard and taken a lot of strength. As Northerner said it's hardly surprising that the diabetes took a back seat. Just wanted to say welcome on board 🙂

Northern - I am currently taking Glucophage, as normal metformin was playing havoc with my tummy! and also, lantus solostar (20 units daily) so a very small amount at the moment. I am self managing, in the sense that we are trying to establish the correct basal dosage for me, so upping the dose by 2 units following 3 days of fasting readings. Thanks for replying!
Kooky - Thanks for replying too! Yeah its been a very tough few months following mum passing away, but I finally feel in control, like shes sending some inner strength. she was type 2, but at the end she was having to inject, and I thought if she can do it, with everything else that's going on, I can manage it too, despite being needle phobic! Lol x

Welcome to the forum Mel 🙂
