Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, I'm a newbie to both the group and diabetes. I had severe necrotising pancreatitis in May this year and was in hospital for 16 weeks. The pancreatitis destroyed my pancreas and left me with Type 1 diabetes. I felt (and still feel!) a bit thrown in at the deep end as when I was discharged from hospital I hadn't done any of my medicating and had to learn to cope with it on my own. No-one had been told about me so it took a few weeks before I had contact with a diabetes nurse or anyone. She has been great and was totally appalled that I'd just been left on my own to deal with all this. Mostly I'm handling being diabetic quite well, but I do have days where I have a very strong feeling that it's not fair and I don't want to have to do this for the rest of my life! I guess this is something I'll eventually get used to. My regime is Nova Rapid at mealtimes and Glargine at night. I've been told I'm on tiny doses (Nova Rapid is 2, 4 and 6 and Glargine is now 24 units) but we're still working it out. My first HbA1c was 6.0 and my doctor says that's very good - still don't really understand all this!

I'm really looking forward to learning more about coping with this condition from you all and hopefully making some new friends too🙂

Cheers
Suzanne

Hi Suzanne, welcome to the forum🙂 Goodness, what an awful introduction you have had to diabetes! Dreadful that you were left to fend for yourself for so long, thankfully now you have some supprot from the DSN so hopefully things will become a little easier in time. That's quite a contrast in the insulins you are taking - I'm on the same ones, but with 6 glargine and around 25 novorapid a day so I'm the opposite way around to you! As is often said, we are all different, and it does keep you on your toes at times.

Please feel free to ask anything, or have a rant or moan, or let us know of any successes you have - all are welcome!🙂
