Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello everyone, I've been T2 for 6 years and my blood sugars used to be well under control but over the last year or so they've become very erratic even though my lifestyle is healthier now and I have lost weight. Doesn't make sense to me and I haven't had much in the way of support from doctors so thought it was about time I joined this forum to be around people like me that understand what it's like having to live with diabetes.
Yesterday I had a scare, my blood sugars were 20 in the morning and the same before I went to bed, even though I had not eaten or drunk anything different to normal. Thankfully this morning they were down to 8.7.
I take 1000mg slow release metformin, 80mg gliclizide and 5mg saxagliptin a day along with 34 units lantus insulin. I hate taking so much medication, especially as it doesn't seem to be even helping my sugars.

Hugs,
Donna

Hi Donna, welcome to the forum.

I have been going through the same thing for the last 12 months of sugar levels going high in the 20's and now mine are erratic. Also I had no support from the doctors and finally I have just changed to a new one.

If this is the first time you have been so high, what are your normal readings like, as if you are feeling unwell this can effect your levels. I would monitor your levels closely over the next few days, as if there is a change in your diabetes it needs to be looked at asap.

It took me months to get my docs to listen to me, but by then damage had been done. As others said to me research what other doctors are like in your area and move to one that understands and cares about diabetics.

Others who take insulin will be able to advise better, as I just take tablets, think we all get fed up with the amount of meds we have to take, I rattle like a bottle of pills, I am on 10 different pills a day plus other lotions and potions.

Welcome to the forum Donna71 🙂

Edit: Opps I should pay attention - you already posted a hello.

But I agree with Pav. Definitely worth monitoring. Hopefully it's just a transient illness disturbing your levels.

Hi Pav and Mark T, thankyou for the welcomes 🙂

I will keep a close check over the next couple of days, I have been very stressed which effects my sugars, but never had such a high reading before.

Also will look into changing doctors. What is it with doctors saying that our sugar levels are 'ok', when it's not them having to live with the consequences? I have felt very let down by my doctor and diabetes 'specialist' recently.

I am going to be starting a 10 day juice 'reboot' soon, and am really hoping this will lower my sugars and help with some weight loss, aswell as make me feel generally better and give me more energy (hopefully).
Would be interested to hear anyone's experiences with juicing, good or bad.

Hi Donna, welcome. Are you planning to have just vegetable juice, or will you be adding fruit? The reason for asking is that fruit juice has loads of natural sugar in it, and without the pulp to slow down digestion it goes straight to the bloodstream. That's not a problem for someone with a fully functioning pancreas, but is not a great idea for most T2 diabetics. Good luck with your detox.

Hi Lee,

I will be having vegetable juice with just a couple of green apples. It will consist of cucumber, celery, kale and apple. The only concern I have is if my sugars do drop (I will be closely monitoring them) is it safe for me to cut down on my meds/insulin to try to avoid hypo's? I am very determined to follow it through for the 10 days, and after that I will still be juicing but maybe adding 1 light meal for dinner. 😉

I'm not criticising, and I'm not type 2, but is it wise to go on a drastic juicing diet? I used to have an eating disorder, and it sounds like the crazy sort of diet I used to do, which would just lead to a binge, and then very mixed up eating. Be careful😱

Hi Bloden,

I have done a lot of research and there is a chance juicing can knock T2 diabetes into remission. Not getting my hopes up but am going to try it. If it can help me reduce the amount of meds at least I would be happy. Am doing the reboot with my husband so we can support each other.
Thanks for your concerns, but I will be fine (I hope). 🙂
