Hi everyone, I'm Karen. Type 1 for 32 years and just getting some problems with the back of my eyes. I posted on the general board yesterday asking for info from anyone who's had treatment on their eyes as I'm pretty shaken up about it. Looking forward to getting to know you all.

Hi Flutterby, welcome to the forum🙂 Sorry to hear about the problems with your eyes, but I've heard that the treatment is very effective these days so hopefully it will work well for you. Goodness! 32 years! You must have seen some changes in that time! I've just read a book about the history of diabetes (Diabetes, the Biography by Robert Tattersall), and things have really improved in leaps and bounds in recent years. Gives us all a lot of hope for the future.🙂

Yes, loads of changes. I was 11 when diagnosed and it was a very traumatic diagnosis as 2 doctors saw me and got it wrong. I ended up weighing 2.5 stone, and am lucky to be alive. Was in and out of hospital all the time, no home blood testing just the old urine tests using Clinitest tablets. Glass syringes - I could go on but I won't!

Just hoping someone can reassure me about the treatment for my eyes now. Can't help but worry.

Hi Flutter, glad we've got another experienced Type 1 on board, I'm a realtive newbie in first year, see you around in other threads soon I hope.

Hope you get your eyes sorted soon.

Take care,

Rossi

Hello Karen

I have only responded to 1 message since I signed up in December 2008, so I hope I you get this message! I am sorry to hear about your eyes. Like you, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when I was 11 and have had it for 33 years.

I am unsure what condition you have in your eyes. Damage to the back of the eyes can happen when you have had diabetes for a long while - like us! It was scary when the eye consultant told me 6 years ago that I had diabetic retinopathy (damage to the retina at the back of the eye). However, I have had laser treatment THREE times in 6 years - the last time was last week! Laser beams are directed in to the eye to treat it. Just a little uncomfortable - and then of course your eye drops mean you can't drive for a few hours (or read texts or emails!)

I am lucky that the damage is at the edge of my retina, so my vision is not affected.

I hope you have a supportive consultant - and if you are unsure of anything, ASK them.

All the best with you eyes.

Hi Karen,

Welcome! This forum is great, hope you enjoy it.

Sorry to hear about your eye problem at the moment and I hope treatment is effective for you. I can understand why you must be very anxious about this, eye complications cant be plesant and I hope, I really do, that it doesnt get any worse for you.

Northener, I googled that book you said in your reply you read and bought it off amazon. Check out my comment! 🙂

Thanks to you all for your welcome and concern. Thanks sugarmouse for your post, I have sent you a private message - hope you get it ok.

Karen.x
