Relationship to Diabetes
In truth neither I nor the person I am caring for (step-father, 81 years old) has been officially diagnosed with diabetes. The reason I hope you will let me use this forum is because we have both long been in the habit of eating a great deal of sugar and unsurprisingly now have high blood sugar and presumably this will develop into diabetes type 2 at some point if not managed properly. Even if it doesn?t, high blood sugar is not good for the body. And in the case of my step-father it may be a factor in his glaucoma, which threatens his eyesight. I am not seeking medical guidance and I know that is not what you offer but some input from people with experience of this business would be very welcome. OK if I join this forum?

Hi crackerjackie, welcome to the forum - of course you may join! 🙂 If you have any questions, please just ask away, people will be very happy to help if they can. 🙂

How do you know you have high blood sugar, are you testing it yourself at home?

Hello crackerjackie, welcome. I wish I'd had your common sense before I got the dreaded diagnosis!

It's not just about sugar (all refined carbohydrates have pretty much the same effect) but reducing the sugar you eat is one of the easiest ways to cut down. Here are some of the most obvious:

Swap sugar for sweeteners in tea/coffee - you will soon get used to it!
Drink sugar free squash and diet fizzy drinks.
Make cakes/biscuits/sweets a weekly treat and not a daily indulgence - have your favourite fruit instead on the days in between.

If you have a few lbs to lose, do it now - it's often the combination of a poor diet and being overweight that can land you with Type 2 diabetes (along with a genetic predisposition if you've inherited the wrong jenes).

Welcome to the forum crackerjackie 🙂

Thank you Northerner, Lee Lee and Mark T for your very welcoming replies.

In answer to your question, Northerner, yes I have been testing, both myself and more diligently my elderly step-father and this leads to my first question because I?ve come to doubt the accuracy of the readings I?m getting and I wanted to get some advice on this. Shall I go ahead now and post the full question I have on the on the general message board?
