Relationship to Diabetes
My husband has type 1 and going through a rough patch (long list) at moment, just by registering on here and reading through the posts we don't feel alone with this anymore, and hopefully can speak to others about on-going ailments and finding some support 🙂

Hiya!

You certainly can ..... that's the benefit of talking to a LOT of people - someone's almost sure to know the answer!

A warm welcome from me..........

You can put your money on most of us here having gone through similar diabetic related problems...so you have came to the right place.....

Look forward to hearing from you...🙂

Hi Alison, there's plenty of help and support on here 🙂 .

Hi Alison, welcome to the forum 🙂 Has your husband been diagnosed long? There are lots of friendly, knowledgeable and experienced people here, so hopefully any questions or concerns you may have, someone will be able to offer help and support 🙂

Hi Alison and welcome 🙂. My son has type 1, so I'm a "carer" like you, not type 1 myself. It's such hard work staying motivated sometimes, so it's great to have a forum like this where you can share experiences and info. and feel less isolated.

Hi all, yes my husband has been type 1 for 26 years. Has retinopathy with loads of laser and 2 lots of Avistin injections in both eyes. Surrendered his licence when he had two night time seizures (assisted) got it back a year later to have it revoked (GP ticked wrong box form) and only just got it back after numerous phone calls eye tests and paperwork to DVLA. Obviously this was devastating to us all as myself or others had to drive Rob to and from work everyday 40 min drive. This stress then caused Rob to be admitted to hospital with suspected stroke (slurred speech and walking problems). This is only a brief summary, I do have lots to ask you all, look forward to speaking to you soon.

He's 12, will be 13 in December, and was diagnosed aged 4. It's been a hard 8 years!! 🙂

Alison,

Just to say hello, from another newbie.

Been on here for a very short time but already, the support / advice has proved invaluable. Feeling much more positive, getting input from people who are in the same boat. Differing / lack of advice from nurses / doctors / dieticians has led me here and this has really open my eyes / helped, having been diagnosed two years ago. Why did I wait so long ??

I hope you find it as useful / informative / supportive as I have.

Oops! A bit late

But welcome Alison from another chelmsfordian 🙂

Good to find so much information on here. Have you Mark T or anybody else been sent on a BERTIE course and did you feel it was useful?

Yes I have.

Had been D for 35 years at the time, and can honestly say - although I understood the principles of carb counting and dose adjustment before I went, and was doing it up to a point - it was the best 4 days of my life I have ever spent, for my diabetes for starters and for seconders, met some brill people and in between all the seriousness of what we were learning, we had an absolute scream. You know - Fun !

We got a lot of 1 to 1 with the DSNs and dietician and there isn't anything you can't ask them - and of course others also ask Qs and you learn from them and also the answers they get too. I came away with several new friends, amongst them 2 DSNs and a dietician LOL

The best thing about BERTIE as opposed to DAFNE, is that you learn summat, go away for a week and put it into practice, then reconvene next week with your results, which are discussed. And then of course, you learn where you went wrong or what tweaks you can try. Whereas they cram DAFNE into one week solid which is a bit too intensive all at once for me.

It's ACE.

I'm not on insulin, so I've not done BERTIE
