Relationship to Diabetes

Hi there, Im Laura. Just found this site, so thought I would sign up and see what's going on out there in the world of diabetes. As a type 1 diabetic for the past 20 years I am still learning about my condition and still find it a struggle at times. Hope to learn a little here and help a little too if I can. 🙂

Hi Laura and welcome. 🙂 I am the Mum of a 12 year old who was diagnosed aged 4. He's been on a pump for the last 5 years, with CGM when we can afford it! What regime are you on?

Hi there, I am on an insulin pump. When I was first diagnosed at the age of 9 I was on two injections a day, and then after a while I went on to four injections. Later I discovered pump therapy and was lucky enough to be referred to have one. It certainly seems to be the way forward and im sure there will be further developments in the future. How does your son find the pump?

We had a similar journey. The twice daily injections were rubbish from the start but we had a dinosaur of a consultant (diagnosis was in 2005!). I've had to push for every improvement in treatment, and eventually we had to move hospitals. He loves his pump, much better control and freedom to eat at any time and adjust for exercise etc. Basal is much better too - on Lantus his levels needed to be 16+ when he went to bed to prevent a hypo by morning, yet would run out completely by mid afternoon. He has the medtronic Veo. Which pump do you have?

Your story also sounds familiar. Its a challenge isn't it! I am on the Accu-Chek spirit combo which I find to be very good. I have always used Accu-chek so I think its really what you get used to as I tried a Medtronic at one point but it didn't suit me. The pump is so much better for getting basal rates correct and trying to avoid hypos or high blood glucose. It is, im sure, a blessing when it comes to your son having more freedom in what he can eat, when and how he can exercise. It allows for more flexibility.

Hi Laura, welcome to the forum 🙂 I hope you will find it interesting, useful, and entertaining! 🙂

Welcome to the forum Laura 🙂

Hi Laura and welcome from another type 1 pumper. 48 years down the line for me though 🙂

Laura, I see you are in Southampton! I know you are new to the forum, but you may be interested in our forum meet this coming Saturday:

http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/boards/showthread.php?t=38928

It's very informal, just a chance to meet others in the same boat and you would be more than welcome 🙂

Thanks for letting me know about this meet up. Unfortunately I cannot make this weekend but would be interested to know about future meets.

And I thought 20 years seemed a while! How do you find the pump? I still seem to be struggling to get my control to be better after 8 years on the pump.

Hi Laura I love having a pump. It was life changing for me. Like many others I had my up's and downs with pumping. Buying the book pumping insulin by John Walsh was a smart move and highly recommended by many pumpers. 🙂
