Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello,
I have just had a medical in which I was told to see my GP as I had what's called +1 in my urine, i have since seen my nurse after fasting for 12 hrs confirmed I had a high glucose in my blood.
I have now to go for a Glucose Intolerance Test in a few days time.
I am worried sick and have been since I was told I COULD be Diabetic, I feel sick in my stomach and just really depressed and can't shake it.
I should I just pull my socks up (so to speak) and get over it but I just can't :(

any advice for me? I don;t want to carry on like this till the end of the week.

Lucksnoop.

Hi Luckysnoop, welcome to the forum 🙂 Try not to worry - easier said than done, I know, but it is good news that the problem has been discovered. You may not yet have reached the levels at which a diagnosis of diabetes will be made, but in any case it would be a good idea to take the opportunity to examine your diet and perhaps begin regular exercise. Although it's never good to be diagnosed with diabetes, many people find that the modifications they make to their diet and lifestyle result in them feeling happier and healthier than they may have done for some time!

A great deal is known about diabetes these days, and it's possible to have a varied and healthy diet - including a few treats! - and a full and active life with it. I would suggest to start a food diary, writing down everything you eat and drink each day, paying particular attention to the amount of carbohydrate in things and writing that down. This will help you assess your diet and look for ways that it might be improved in order to make it more 'diabetes-friendly'.

Let us know how your test goes, and please ask any questions you may have - we will be happy to help out where we can! 🙂

Hiya!

Exactly ! You now have what can only be called a Golden Opportunity - to make things better for yourself healthwise for the future. We don't get ever so many of these chances in a lifetime, so make the most of it.

Oh and DO take a really good book to the Glucose Intolerance Test venue - there is a lot of sitting around involved and you can't do ANYTHING - even go and get a cup of coffee! - for 2 hours.

Normally, they test your blood (fingerprick) Then you drink a measured amount of glucose - often served up as Lucozade - and if you don't like Lucozade, I can assure you it's a lot better tasting than just glucose! and then you sit there and don't do anything. They then test your blood again, maybe after an hour, but always after 2 hours.

Nice hospitals will tell you the results there and then, but you need to go back to your doc anyway, a few days later once they've told him officially. Try and remember the numbers, then you can come and tell us and we'll give our non-medical opinions, whilst you are waiting to see your GP again.

We'd all far rather have nothing wrong with us, but it certainly ain't a death sentence these days, so don't get panicking!

Thanks Northerner, I am quite active and I would say fit as I go scuba diving, I am not over weight,
46Years old, 12st 6lbs, 5ft 9" 34" waist.
But my diet is bad, I am very fussy when it comes to food, as I work Offshore that can be a problem for me.
I will start a diary and see what happens.
Thanks

That's good to hear 🙂 Hopefully, some adjustments to your diet will help bring your blood sugar levels under control 🙂 You might want to look into low GI/GL diets as a way of keeping flexibility in your diet, but eating more appropriately - The GL Diet for Dummies is a good introduction 🙂

well I have my result and it's good news. I don't have diabetes 🙂 but I have the onset or the beginning of it.
I have to make an appointment with the nurses again to check out my diet and try and control it that way. but think that might be the hard part as I am a bit fussy when it comes to food.
so fingers crossed I can get it sorted before it develops

That's great news! 🙂 What you should do though is regard yourself as though you do have diabetes and make those changes that would be necessary had the diagnosis gone the other way. I would recommend getting some regular daily exercise and looking into the GL diet - this isn't a weight loss diet (although it is possible to lose weight on it, if you need to), but a means of selecting food that will release its energy slowly and steadily, having less impact on your blood sugar levels and therefore reducing the burden being placed on your pancreas 🙂 The GL Diet for Dummies is a good introduction, and it should help you retain a great deal of flexibility with your diet.

Do let us know how things go, you will always be welcome here if you have any questions of need some support!

Thanks Northerner I will look in to that, I am going to start to make changes in fact I already have but will keep in touch,
Thanks for the info and help.
