Hi,

I have just been diagnosed Type 2. I have a million questions so I hope you guys can help me!

Regards,

Mark.

Hi there, you've definitely come to the right place. There are lots of knowledgeable people here all worth their weight in gold. I was diagnosed in January and have found the support and friendliness of everyone on here a huge help. :D

Hi Mark welcome to the forum 🙂 How did you come to be diagnosed, and have you been put on any medication for your diabetes?

I would suggest having a browse of our Useful links thread for some sources of reliable information. Particularly recommended are Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, plus Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - these should help answer some of your questions, although I am sure you will have many remaining that you are more than welcome to ask us! 🙂

Hello Mark and welcome to the forum 🙂
Ask away there's a wealth of knowledge on the forum.

Hi Cat, That's good to know thanks. My biggest concern at the moment is that I don't know how long I've had the disease or even if length of time is relevant. I'm only just over on the suger readings but if I've been just over for years, is there a risk that the disease could be getting near the last stages? I've been a bit overweight for many years, I have a blotchy complexion and I've had many skin problems all my life. The optician said there were no signs of high blood pressure or diabetes earlier this year but again, I've had high blood pressure for quite a while although I am now on Ramipril to control my BP. I've had sciatica for years so would never have noticed neuropathy. All in all, I'm worried that despite previous blood tests showing negative for diabetes, I might have been diabetic a long time. Maybe I don't have long to live. I'm 51 and I'd really like to know if I have a fighting chance of beating the disease if I change my diet and start exercising (both of which I have done but it's too early to see a reduction in my weight or improvement in my fitness levels). I'm feeling quite anxious about it all.

Thanks Notherner, I'll follow your advice and get browsing!

Cheers,

Mark.

Mark, do try not to worry. The main thing is that, now you have been diagnosed you can set about learning how to look after yourself. From what you say it sounds like you have been diagnosed early, so you have a very good chance of lowering your risks of any future problems considerably. Many people actually find that their diagnosis, and the changes they make to their diet and activity levels, can actually lead to them feeling fitter, happeir and healthier than they have done for some time! 🙂

Thanks Steff. That's a very impressive number of posts you have there. That's over 700 posts a month!

Hi Mark, welcome. You can safely stop worrying... it doesn't help and just makes you feel bad. You're at the beginning of what will probably be a very long journey. I was on diet/exercise for over 8 years before needing any kind of medication, so it's possible to delay the process.

Sounds like you're already taking the first steps to a healthier lifestyle - and you've found this forum! Well done, and keep asking questions.

Hi Mark,
if as you say you have had regular blood tests then stop worrying, it would have been picked up. 🙂
Everything will seem over welming to start with, but once you get your head around things it wont seem so bad.
51 is young so plenty of life left in you yet 🙂 There's quite a few type 1's on the forum who have had diabetes for 50 plus years and are fit and healthy with it. :D

Hi again Mark, I didn't answer the question you asked me because I knew someone more knowledgable than me could answer your question. And he did :D it's a bit daunting and scary when you first find out you have diabetes. But as you have found out its not a death sentence, just a big hint you need to do a lot to make your life and health fitter and better...and you will. :D

Welcome to the forum Mark 🙂

Thank you all

Wow, that was quite a welcome. I've already read some of the literature you've pointed me towards and I now feel I have somewhere to go when I need support. You've already taken away some of my anxiety so thank you for that.

Mark.

Hello Mark, welcome to the forum.

I'm going to be hitting the big five oh this year and was diagnosed in October, 2009.

I too had been overweight (Ok 'obese') for many years prior to that. Anyway, like you I started exercising (just a brisk walk each day mostly), revamped my diet and started to lose the weight.

Anyway, suffice to say that I am now healthier and fitter than I was over ten years ago and am now diet and exercise controlled only.

So, yes, there can be light at the end of the tunnel!

Good luck with everything!

Andy 🙂
