My daughter age 12 was diagnosed with T1 in October 2012 no real problems at the moment. Have read some very interesting posts so far.

Hi Claire, welcome to the forum 🙂 Good to hear that there are no major problems and she is getting to grips with things! How did she come to be diagnosed?

There are lots of resources available for parents of children with diabetes. It's worth looking at the Children with Diabetes website for lots of information, and I would also recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas, which is an excellent reference book covering all aspects of living with Type 1.

What insulin regime is your daughter on?

Thanks will have a look for the book. She was diagnosed quickly as I spotted the symptoms having a nephew who also has T1 (diagnosed at the same age) so she got to hospital before she actually fell ill. She is currently injecting NovoRapid & Levemir.

Ah, that's good that you were able to spot the symptoms 🙂 I became extremely ill before being diagnosed because I knew nothing about diabetes - I thought I just had a bad stomach bug! I ended up in hospital for 8 days! 😱

Hi Claire D-A welcome from me too-glad things are fine at the moment -how was she diagnosed? how did she take to it all? and how did you ? my son is 16 [dx dec 2011]. you will find everyone really supportive and someone will always have an answer for things that you may not know or are a little unsure of-welcome again -soz just caught up with that last post - does she see the nephew-if so how nice they can discuss things diabetes wise as lots dont know anyone t1 they can talk to

Yes he lives round the corner although you wouldnt wish it on anyone else its nice that they can have a chat about things.She has coped so well with it all and always done her own injections. I have recently been reading lots of info on the net & think things have really hit home with me which is why I?ve ended up here. Thanks for the warm welcome everyone

But its good they can talk -H ( We do call him that) always said he wishes there were other kids in his year-and even when he went into the 6th form and they took new outsiders in was dissapointed no new folk were in the same diabetic boat as him. the only other person he knows is a mates stepdad who is very very poorly controlled -a few weeks into dx when we were round their house and he demonstrated to us how he shakes and reacts in his night hypos- I nearly passed out -and H was pretty shocked as at that stage he had never had a hypo! Maybe it might in a mad way have made H think gosh i need to know what im doing - and has always done what hes supposed to- touch wood!

thats a shame think its good to have someone the same age as you to talk to. My daughter has nine other children in her school who are T1 I dont think she has talked to any of them as not in her year but there are others in the medical room at lunch time which makes her feel shes not the only one. Children just dont want to be different to everyone else.
