Type 2
Got confirmation of type 2 diabetes tonight after blood tests begin medication tomorrow been reading the bit of paper inside pill packet all rather daunting

Hope you get on okay with meds. I was diagnosed last Wednesday. Got my first appointment with the nurse tomorrow. Haven't seen anyone in an official capacity yet with regard to my diagnosis. Don't even know yet if type 1 or type 2. Everything right now for me is very daunting, feel like I ask stupid questions. Every question from hubby and daughter is can you eat/have that?? We will get there with time and a lot of patience. :D

Hi Delphus, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis - how did you come to be diagnosed? What medication have you been given? Try not to worry, although diabetes is a serious condition, it is something that can be managed well with the right knowledge and application, and a diagnosis can often have a very positive impact on a person's life as the changes made to diet and activity levels can lead to a much happier and healthier you! 🙂

A good place to start is by reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter. These will give you a good introduction to Type 2 and the approach you need to take in order to achieve good blood sugar control. I would also highly recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, an indispensable book that many of our members find both informative and reassuring. There are links to lots more good resources in our 'Useful Links' thread.

If you have any questions at all - whatever they may be! - then please do ask! There are loads of lovely, friendly and knowledgeable people here who will know the answer or will have been through the same thing.

Di-agnosis

My cousin , who has a friend with type 1, kept nagging me to be tested. Eventually , and having lost. Weight had test couple of weeks ago was 24.5 had repeat test after fast this was 15.7 dispatched to See a doctor first result showed diabetes and underactive thyroid by next day high cholesterol and blood pressure diagnosed. Put straight on to Ramopril and Levothyroxine. Am now on Metformin and Simvastrin awaiting some of the side effects. I now have a small bear I was given the day I was diagnosed diabetic , his name is Di short for Diabetic Bear

Hi Delphus, I'm interested in your blood test results as they are on the high side for a Type 2. Plus, you say you have been losing weight. There may be a possibility that you are not Type 2 but a slow-onset Type 1, also known as Type 1.5 or LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adulthood). Do you mind me asking how old you are? Do you have any family history of diabetes?

Have you been given a blood testing meter so that you can monitor your blood sugar levels at home? If not, then I would ask for one for a couple of reasons: you need to keep an eye on your fasting/waking levels and also you need to monitor the effects of your meals on your levels to find out how well you tolerate things. If you find your levels (especially fasting) remain high then I would go back to your doctor and ask if there is a possibility you might be Type 1.5/LADA.

Read the Diabetes UK Advocacy Pack in case your doctor is reluctant to issue you with a meter and prescribe strips.

When do you next see your doctor? Regarding metformin: the side-effects most people experience is being a bit windy. Normally, the side-effects will subside within a couple of weeks or so, but if you fnd it intolerable then there is a 'slow-release' version called Glucophage SR which many people find OK instead (it's a bit more expensive, hence they issue you with the cheaper stuff to begin with!). Also, there are alternatives to Simvastatin and Ramipril, so if you find yourself getting any of the side-effects on the the leaflets, then do let your doctor know.

Let us know how things go! 🙂

p.s. I changed your profile from Type1 to Type2 to avoid confusion! 🙂

Thanks for all the replies

I am 59 this year, i have been told the group of 4 coditions is heriditary. imy mother certainly had underactive thyroid and i have vague feeling she may havehad diabetes being controlled by diet. her sister had diabetes in her last years, my grandmothr i dont think had time to devlope it as she died of cancer but her mother, as photos show , was quite alarge lady but she to shed weight in older age and i am pretty sure my Aunt said that she had diabetes

My original 24. 5 went down to 15 overnight after fasting, the previous test result was before I knew I should fast We have biscuits at work so am afraid had been eating them and a bit of a sugar Fest. Any way the day of 15 . Whatever I had to go to Dr. Or A &E he then sent me for blood samples. Meanwhile I was monitoring what. I ate, same day two results back from hospital the diabetes 2 and unexpected myxedema . I had to in the next day by which high blood pressure and high cholesterol found. Immediately went on tablets for the myxomatosis and the blood pressure but he also wanted confirmatory blood test for diabetes and I think the cholesterol. Results came in day before yesterday which confirmed Diabetes 2 I was hovering around 16 despite. Having changed what I ate. Started 1 tablet Metformin yesterday I do this for 3 days, then do another 3 days with 2 and then it's 3 a day.

As I have not been to DESMOND centre , Dr says i will get a referral letter from him . As yet a lot of the other questions you ask the answer currently is no. I am due to have mor blood sampled on 11 th Dr said he would probably see me regularly till he felt everything had settled down. Please excuse any weird words my Ipad seems to substitute words must go and take rest of morning pills

I suppose chicken madras is out of question!
