Hi, I was diagnosed April 2011 when my fasting sugar was 7.1. It went up to 8 in my last blood test and I was put on metaformin. I tried exercise and diet which wasn't easy as I suffer from clinical depression. That didn't work so I have been taking the metaformin. This maybe the way my GP wants to go but I can't eat properly and have to run to the loo quite a few times a day. Is there an alternative I can ask my GP for?? I am so miserable right now :(

Welcome to the forums roxy12 🙂

How long have you been on the metformin? It can take a couple of months for your tummy to settle down. There is also a slow release version that some people find easier.

roxy hi and a warm welcome to the forum

I have been taking metaformin for a month. I can't cope with the awful nausea any longer. It is especially difficult as I bake and decorate cakes for a living :D perfect job for a diabetic :D lol

I have an appt with my GP this afternoon I will ask her about the slow release version.

Thanks for your help and the welcome :D

Hi Roxy, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about the problems with the nausea, it really can affect your quality of life. I hope that the appointment goes well and that the doctor is able to offer you a better treatment.

Sorry to hear you are struggling with Metformin. Glocophage SR does seem to be easier on the tum, so you could ask your GP about that.

Additionally, if I remember right from posts by T2s nausea can be worse depending on when you take the tabs and how many carbs you are eating. I *think* that reducing carb intake helps with the nausea.

Hi Roxy12

I was diagnosed with Type 2 in July 2012. I was put straight on metformin as my sugar level was 21 then 17.3 fasting. I find that if I take my metformin during my meal it doesn't affect me at all. The first week was a bit dodgy, especially in the morning, with upset tummy, but now things are fine and I don't suffer with any side effects.

I've been on Metformin pretty much since diagnosis now - so over a year! I was one of the fortunate ones that wasn't effected by side effects so much (I get the odd day when my tummy plays up).

However, for some people they never totally accept either the normal metformin or the slow release version.

I've always found that taking metformin with (usually before) food has greatly helped.
