Hello everyone. I'm 33, male, type 1 since 1990. I attended The Big Event conference at the weekend and came away resolved to improve my cotrol, so I'm here to learn and hopefully may offer a word or two of encouragement also.

May I offer to buy the first 'virtual' round...? So, what are you drinking?

Hi doc brown and a warm welcome to the forum if your buying I'll have a g and t ta 🙂

Hi Doc, welcome to the forum 🙂 Good to hear The Big Event motivated you! How has control been generally over the past 20-odd years? What sort of insulin regime are you on? We've got people here with all sorts of experience, so you're bound to have lots in common. If you've got any questions, then please just ask - just because you've been diagnosed a while doesn't mean you're expected to know everything. In fact it's often the opposite, that people diagnosed very young are just left to get on with things as adults because the HCPs think you must have it all sussed, and you miss out on the more up to date thinking on things.

I'll look forward to hearing more from you - mine's a pint of Stella, please 😉

Welcome Doc!

I'll have a large Amaretto on the rocks if you're buying 🙂

Hi there, mine's a Kasteelbier please. Haven't had one of those glasses of loveliness for quite a while now.

Andy 🙂

Hi Doc_Brown,
welcome to the forum. Pull up a chair and make yourself comfy🙂

Welcome Doc.

I have temporarily given up drink while I try to sort out my BG levels, but a virtual coffee suits me just fine!

Welcome to the forum Doc 🙂

I'll have a carb-less Latte please 😉

Hi Doc. Welcome 🙂

I'll plump for a pint of bitter. Thank you.

Rob

Thanks for the warm welcome, all.

To answer your questions: My control historically has been difficult. When some people talk about getting worried that their BG is above 10, I tend to think that's the stuff of dreams! My HbA1c has never been under 7%. I've now been on a pump for about four years, with Humalog. It's made life easier but I've always felt that I could apply myself better to get more out of it. Hopefully that will start to take shape (finally!).

And I think you've hit the nail on the head with your comment about the HCPs, plus I've always been stubbornly self-sufficient.

I look forward to sharing experiences with you all.

Hiya ... soooo - have you been offered DAFNE or anything similar?

I only ask because I was diagnosed a million years ago and had tried to keep up with everything that went on, thought I had - and wondered whether I needed to go on the course I was offered.

Absolute revelation to me. After 35 years, I did the course and actually felt I might know now, what I was really doing .....

Very empowering in fact !

Hiya Doc

Good to see you here.

Good to hear you are looking to tighten up your control. Keep us posted with your successes, failures (and frustrations!) and folks here will do their best to encourage you and/or share any thoughts that might give you fresh perspective 🙂

I hear that the Big Event was really good.

Well, not DAFNE, but something similar -- three times, in fact. I was originally on the list for pump therapy in 2004, so I've been carb counting and adjusting boluses since then, really. The pump was put on hold as I moved away from the area. I then did another DAFNE-style course in about 2005, which helped a lot, and of course when I finally did get on the pump in 2007, I had to do all the induction jazz again.

Each time, I've learned something new, and what's really struck me is how much has changed since 1990.

But I've just been lazy, basically. I've never made time to do very many proper basal tests, so I've been winging it a bit, I'm afraid. Well, it's time to put an end to that... 🙂

Hi there Doc,
It'll be a Guinness for me.........thx and hopefully see you around.

Hey welcome! As I work in a bar I feel like the virtual bar maid, here to hear your woes and life stories! So pull up a stall and unload them troubles! lol

Bekki😛

Hi Doc,

Welcome 🙂

Your D experiences sound pretty similar to mine. I was diagnosed aged 3 almost 20 years ago and for a long time was just left to get on with things even though my control wasn't great. It was only when I started pumping 3 years ago that I was taught anything - I sometimes wonder whether it's the pump which has improved my control, or the knowledge I acquired as a result of switching to the pump. Probably a bit of both.

My HbA1c has never been under 7% either - although my clinic aims for 7%, quite a bit higher than I've heard of anywhere else. Fortunately I haven't been over 8% for a long time now. My DSN & consultant are always happy with me when I attend appointments, but I know things could be better.

Basal testing also an issue with me. I just hate it! I love my food. And it's hard to remember or be motivated to do it when you're working, travelling, out with friends, looking after kids, exercising... I know I probably sound like I'm making excuses! It's something I do need to work on but I only do it very rarely and wing it quite often myself.

So I feel your pain - I don't think I do a bad job, but I know it could and probably should be better! If anything will help you (& me!) get back on track it's these guys 🙂

Welcome to the forum Doc 🙂
