Relationship to Diabetes

Hello,

Just stumbled across this board and thought I'd register.

I'm Paul, 31 years old and live in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. I've been a Type 1 Diabetic for 13 years. I've just been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and started on (Levo)Thyroxine today so waiting to see how that goes.

Including me, 5 members of my family (3 boys and 2 girls - me, my brother and 3 cousins) have diabetes all on my mothers side. All the boys have had late onset diabetes (18+) and both girls have had it from birth.

I participated in the retinal photography scanning pilot in Aberdeen, and more recently attended the first 5-day DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) course in Aberdeen which has had the most positive effect on my blood sugar control.

i am sure there will be a lot of things you will be able to advise on and congrats on the dafne course 🙂 makes everything a whole lot easier when you have the ability to carb count.

Welcome to the forum! I am sure you will be a wealth of knowledge - so will look forward to reading your posts! My son is just 11 and recently diagnosed, so i am always on here looking for advice - its great and everyone is really friendly!:DBev
 
Wow - really impressed with this board already, especially how busy it is! I used to look in on the iVillage.co.uk one, but it was always really quiet!

My son is 12, type 1 and diagnosed July 07, so nealy two years ago now. He tested postive for thyroid antibodies which means that at sometime in the future he could develop an under active thyroid but it is ok at the moment.

He is due to start on a pump 7th July.

Hi Paul,

Hope the Thyroxine works for you. I was diagnosed with with this and diabetes at the same time - certainly explained why I'd been feeling so tired!
