Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I am 55 years old and have been very lucky that my Doctor has been monitoring me for the last 6 years due to the fact that both parents have type 2. My bloods tipped over the 8 this time, and I have been given three months to see if I can get things under the numbers before I hae the first of the HB1 tests done.

So far I have been able to keep the bloods under ten apart from the odd blip, but they are normally about 7 - 8 post meal and sometimes as low at 4.8 area before eating.

Right now I have got a stinking cold, which I have learnt my affect the readings.

So much to learn about how to control things. Again I have been very lucky and my surgery gave me a meter and is being more than generous with blood strips.

Hi Jackie, welcome to the forum 🙂 It does sound like you have an excellent GP who is doing all the right things to help you to stay healthy! I'd suggest having a browse of the links in our 'Useful Links' thread - one of the best ways to keep your levels under control is to imagine that you have received your diagnosis and must now act and eat as though you have diabetes. As you probably know, a diet that is healthy for someone with diabetes is healthy for everyone, although there may be certain things that, as individuals, we find difficult to tolerate well - some people find that cereals or certain types of bread are no good, others may find they are OK with things. You need to use your meter to see what foods are giving you hte higher numbers then either reduce portion size or avoid them altogether.

If you have any questions then please ask away, there are lots of knowledgeable and friendly people here who will try their best to help - an no question is 'silly', so whatever it is, ask! 🙂

Welcome to the forum Jackie - sounds like you have a supportive GP. So many Type 2's struggle with getting a meter and strips - so you are ahead of the game there.

One thing to consider when planning meals is how you cook things - purees, soups mash will raise your blood sugar faster than having the veg/fruit whole.
