Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone!

I've been type 2 diabetic for four years now. I was diagnosed when I was 18, which I was told is unusual. I've always struggled with my weight, and for as long as I can remember I have been obese. Now at 22 I feel I am finally coming to terms with my diabetes, after neglecting it for so long.

I've been worried, as I know that there are long term health risks associated with diabetes, and I know I haven't been as good as I should have been. I thought it was finally time I started to get to grips with it.

I hope to chat soon!

Hi Duskie, welcome to the forum 🙂 Good to hear that you are trying to get to grips with your diabetes management, you'll find lots of people here that will do their best to help you! Are you on any medication for your diabetes? Many people find that a good place to start is to begin a food diary, recording everything you eat and drink, and also putting down the carb, fat and protein content. This might sound tedious, but it will really help when you go to your GP or nurse for advice on how to proceed. You will be able to review the diary and identify places where the best improvements can be made, but either reducing portions of, say potatoes, and including more of others such as vegetables. If your GP has prescribed test strips for a blood glucose meter, then also record your waking levels, your pre- and post-meal levels at either 1 or 2 hours. Also, it;s a good idea to get a Pedometer with Step Counter so you can get an idea of how many steps you take each day.

Although you have been diagnosed four years, I would highly recommend reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and get a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, which many of our members have found really useful.

Please ask any questions you may have - there are lots of friendly, knowledgeable people here to help, and no question is considered 'silly' 🙂

I look forward to hearing more from you.

Duskie hi and a warm welcome to the forum

Welcome to the forum Duskie 🙂

Welcome Duskie, nice to hear a positive approach to getting control.

Welcome Duskie, feel free to ask any questions

Hello Duskie and welcome to the forum. I hope you find them useful. There is normally someone around who will try and help you if you have a question.

Hi Duskie. Welcome 🙂

Most people don't give two hoots about their health until something goes wrong (that was certainly me for most of my life) so well done for taking a positive approach while you've got an awful lot of life ahead of you.🙂

Once you understand what is happening inside and what you can do about it, you'll find it so much easier.

Rob

Thank you so much for the warm welcome!

Speaking of medication, I was actually put on a new one today. I was taking Byetta jabs twice daily, but I have the memory of a goldfish :( I was always forgetting, so my nurse put me on a new one. Its called bydureon, and its a slow release exenatide injection that I only have to take once a week.

The needle hurts like heck :( But I hope it will be worth it.

Thanks again for the welcomes, and I'm pleased to meet you all!

We've had quite a few on Byetta Duskie, but I think you're our frst member on bydureon - you will have to let us know how you get on with it! 🙂 I hope it works well for you. If your injections are hurting, then do please speak to your nurse about the possibility of different sized needles as these can sometimes help, and also get her/him to check that you are using good technique.

Good luck with it! 🙂
