Hi to you all.i am new on here.was recently diagnosed with type 2.Had raised glucose for about 7 years.Feeling a bit confused about weather or not to self test.Nurse say's there is no need! I do anyway.am on metformin and simvastatin. My diabetes is apparently well controlled. Hello

Hello and welcome to the forums from a fellow Type 2. It seems to be common for docs to advise against testing but you'll soon find that most of us think our meter is our best friend. Especially in the early days whislt we find out what effect different foods have on our BG's. Sounds like it's working for you already if your levels are good. XXXXX

Hi littleolme, welcome to the forum🙂 Did you mean to put MODY in your profile? You can change it to Type 2 if it was a mistake.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but it is good to hear that your nurse considers it to be well controlled. Did she give you the numbers of any of your test results? Blythespirit is right - most people here would agree that testing is the best way to learn how any modifications to your diet are working - things like: can you tolerate bread in the morning or does it send your blood sugar high, what do potatoes do to your levels and what is the best portion size for you etc. Once you have learned what is good and bad for you as an individual then you can reduce the amount of testing you need to do, but at the start you will only be guessing if you cannot test.

Have a read of Diabetes UK's position statement on self-monitoring to give you a more balanced view of self-testing than your nurse has done. I would also highly recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker and looking at the links in our 'Useful Links' thread.

Please ask anything that you are unsure or worried about and we will do our best to help - no question is considered 'silly'! 🙂

Hi Blythspirit, thanx for the welcome.I wonder if they dont want us to test in case we then want free strips. At the moment i am testing first thing in the morning before eating, then two hour's after eating.i am a bit obsessed with it at the moment. The nurse say's the hba1c give's an over all average of the last three month's level's.am trying to understand the whole thing.

thanx for the warm welcome and good advise.I'll get to grip's with this thing.I just need to understand it a bit better.

Hi Littleolme. Welcome 🙂
