Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi everyone,
I'm Pippa, 23 years old from Leeds. I've had type 1 Diabetes since I was 4. I've always been the type to push my diabetes to the back of my mind. I think this is partly to do with being diabetic for so long and also because I always hated being different. I've started to think about things a lot more recently in terms of my treatment options etc and realised that I don't really have a clue what I want, which is why I've joined here! Looking forward to having some good discussions with you all.
Pippa x

Welcome from me Pippa.....................

I would recommend getting educated again, with DAFNE or BERTIE courses. All about carb counting amongst many other things..........

Just seeing it all work in practice was motivation enough for me...........:D

Hi Pippa, welcome to the forum 🙂 Don't worry, you are not alone in feeling how you do, but it is good to hear that you are determined to get to grips with things - it really will make life much easier and better for you and there are loads of knowledgeable and experienced people here who will offer their support 🙂

What insulin regime are you on and how are you finding it? Do you carb count? Have a look in the Useful links thread to see if there is anything that might help, and please ask any quetions you may heve. Just because you've been diagnosed for a long time doesn't mean you are expected to know everything and things may have changed without you realising that there are new and better ways to do things 🙂

Hi Pippa

Welcome from me too!

Not sure what you mean though, how do you mean 'not sure what you want' - are you unhappy/unsatisfied with some aspect of your regime/diabetic control, or is it like you've got what you were given and you ain't sure whether that's cutting edge as of November 2011 - or very 1999? LOL

We could start off by enquiring of you, what insulins are you on and whether you've been on a carb-counting course?

Plus if you are having difficulty with BG's/A1c - tell us! - and we'll try and help.

We don't do guilt trips round here and if a person doesn't know something, it's usually because nobody bothered to tell them. And if they do know but don't understand, then it hasn't been explained properly! :D

Thank you both of you!
I'm on basal bolus injections - humalog lispro for breakfast, lunch and tea and 28 units of lantus in the mornings. My HbA1C is rubbish... around 9% I think. 77 on this weird new system. Don't really carb count, just have a rough idea of how much insulin I take for what meals... I really am an awful diabetic! I'm thinking about a DAFNE course, going to an info meeting next week so will let you know how I get on!

wow you guys reply quick around here! At the moment I'm basically confused because I feel under a bit of pressure to get a pump, but just gonna have a browse around on here first and then maybe post about it later on I think. Hoping to get to grips with things with this DAFNE thing first! Fingers crossed!

Hi Pippa speedy gonsalesez here hun lol, a warm welcome to the forum from me x

We've got lots of members who have done DAFNE and it has transformed their lives, so hopefully you will get a lot out of it too! 🙂 I would say if it is offered, take it and I hope you don't have to wait too long 🙂

Hi Pippa. Welcome 🙂

You sound like me last year :D

My Hb was over 8 and I didn't carb count. Took lucky guesses.🙄

Since learning from the forum and elsewhere, my Hb is now around 6.2% and we can get the carb/insulin ratios pretty much spot on. All without the aid of DAFNE, but if you can get on the courses, go for it.

Rob

Welcome to the forum Pippa 🙂 x

Hi Pippa, Welcome from me too x🙂

welcome pippa and maybe you can give us parents some advice in what to do with our children because you were one of them and i expect youe parents had the same problem that we have now

Welcome Pippa.

I hope that a carb counting course will help you get to grips with better control with basal bolus insulin. If you do want to go for a pump, then carb counting competence is a pre-requirement, so will help in both ways.

Welcome to the forums Pippa 🙂

Welcome 🙂

Hear Hear about DAFNE etc (some areas have their own carb-counting courses) and if you can't get on a real life course there is an on-line version of one called BERTIE that you can do. It comes with all necessary approvals from NICE and the NHS - but always plump for the hands-on course if you can, as you can't ask questions of a computer.

Also, other peoples experiences are very useful to know about too, as are their questions and opinions during the course.

Best spent week of my diabetic life.

(At the end of which I actually wondered how the Hell I'd managed to stay alive for the last 35 years, without it!)

Thank you!

Thank you all for your warm welcome and advice re: carb counting and DAFNE, I think it's definitely worth a try, will see what they say at the meeting on Tuesday!
