Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello everyone. I'm new to this and just wanted somewhere I could feel like I'm not the only person with Diabetes and would be nice to talk to people. I supposedly have type 2 but am not convinced of this myself. I am young and of ideal weight but now being treated with insulin.

Hi 99drew. Welcome 🙂

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis. The media don't report on the 20% of Type 2s who are, like you, slim and young. Insulin resistance doesn't need obesity to give you a hard time. It can make it worse and makes for better headlines.

Are you testing your own blood glucose ?

And if so, what levels are you getting ?

Rob

Welcome to the forums 99drew 🙂

Did your Doctors perform c-peptide/antibody tests to rule out Type 1?

Hi Drew, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about the confusion about your diagnosis - how were you diagnosed and how long ago? It's not unheard of for people to get the wrong diagnosis and there are tests that can be done to clarify what Type you are. What insulin regime are you on? About 20% of people with Type 2 are not overweight when diagnosed, and often there is a strong genetic link - do you have other family members who have diabetes?

Sorry for all the questions! 🙂 You're certainly not alone with your diabetes here, so I'm glad you have found us. Diabetes can be a very isolating illness, particularly with all the negative campaigning there is about it being a 'lifestyle' disease, but here you'll get none of that nonsense - no-one deserves to have diabetes.

I would recommend having a look at the 'Useful Links' thread for some suggestions for good reading. I'm presuming that, since you are on insulin, you are getting test strips prescribed by your doctor? Testing is the best tool we have to help us manage our blood sugars and find out the best and worst foods for us as individuals (since tolerances to certain foods can vary).

Please feel free to ask us anything you are unsure of - there are hundreds of people with lots of experience and knowledge who will be happy to help and support you! 🙂

Thank you for replying to me. I am testing my blood glucose, I get all sorts of levels, not drastically high but I get 8-14 before eating and 9-13 after eating. There never seems to be a pattern with my sugar levels.

I think they did. But they run lots of different tests all the time and I'm often not told what they are testing and why.

What insulin are you injecting drew ?

And how often ?

If you're on basal/bolus (MDI - multiple daily injections) then it would hard to say which type you are without the test mark mentioned.

I'm surprised you're straight onto insulin which does suggest there's more to it than a bit of resistance.

I went to my doctors last year as I had been feeling frequently shaky and extermely hot after eating and kept feeling dizzy. I was then referred to a specialist and diagnosed with being diabetic last August. They found me very unusual and ran tests and test and couldn't tell me what type I was. I then moved and my new hopsital treated me better, they put me on pills and then moved me straight on to insulin when that didnt work and it was the new hospital that diagnosed me as type 2.
My auntie on my mum's side has type1 and my grandad had type 2.

I'm so pleased I have found this forum.

I've got two types - Novo Rapid which is 3 times a day with meals and Lantus which is once a day.

I did go from Gliclazide on to insulin but I'm glad I'm not the only one confused.

:D There does seem to be a grey area between some of the types which defies definition !:D

I would say, in treatment terms, it's probably irrelevant at the moment, but obviously you want to know what your body's doing to you for peace of mind.

You're on standard MDI and most type 1s are on lantus and novorapid. Not sure how you could get the doctors to probe further.

You can ask to have a full printout of the tests and results they have done. If they baulk at this then you could always remind them that you only have to do a Freedom of Information request and they have to hand over the results.

It's possible that you are what is known as a 'Type 1.5' or LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adulthood). This is a form os slow-onset diabetes which can be managed with tablets initially, but before too long the pancreas can no longer produce sufficient insulin so you need to inject. It would be worth going to your doctor and asking to see the results of all the tests you have had - you are entitled to know and they can't withhold the information. Personally, I would feel better the more information I had. I was a slow-onset Type 1.

What amounts are you injecting normally? Have you been offered a diabetes education course, such as DAFNE or BERTIE? If not, then you should ask about these.

Welcome to the forum Drew.

I hope they get your treatment right soon so your bg levels are more consistently in the region you need them to be.

Andy 🙂

I'm truly amazed at how much information I'm getting from people. Thank you all.
I will speak to the consultant next time I see him to find out what tests I've had so far and what they mean for me.
I'm always concerned that I may not be giving myself the correct insulin level but I shall carry on experimenting.
I haven't been offered any form of education and will ask about that next time too.

Thank you all!
(Diagnosed as diabetic August 2010)

Thanks... I shall ask and see what they say
