Hello
My name is Val and i am from Essex. I have recently been diagnosed as having Diabetes as i have been feeling quite ill for a while now. I am also a Lupus sufferer and have Rheumatoid Arthritis too and they say that the Diabetes is linked with the Lupus:confused:. Anyways i am a month into my medication and i am finding it very hard as the medication really plays my tummy up. My blood sugar levels were quite high but now they seem to be coming down which is good.
I so look forward to chatting and talking to like minded people about all this as it is a mine field for me at the moment.
Chat soon
Val xx

warm welcome...............do not fear, diabetes can be treated well with the right information

Hi Val, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, hopefully now that you are diagnosed things will improve for you as you learn to manage your blood sugar levels. What medication are you on? If it is metformin that is casing the tummy troubles, let your doctor know - there is a different form that can be prescribed called Glucophage SR which many people tolerate much better than the ordinary form.

Not sure about the lupus link - my understanding is that lupus is an autoimmune condition, as is Type 1 diabetes, but not Type 2 diabetes.

You've come to the right place for lots of friendly support from people who have all sorts of different experiences with diabetes, so please feel free to ask any questions you may have - nothing is considered 'silly'! 🙂

Have a look at the links in this thread to give you an idea of how to manage your diabetes:

The book by Gretchen Becker is particularly well recommended 🙂 I look forward to hearing more from you!

Hi Val!, welcome to the forum. I'm newly diagnosed to, 4m now, also starting on a new regime, If it weren't for these kind folks here I wouldn't have know about it, and they are such a knowledgeable and helpful bunch. I owe them a lot already.
(Where in essex are you from, I am originally from there too.)

Hi Val and welcome to the forum.

If you are on metformin it can cause all kinds of gastric issue, some get upset stomach, other toilet troubles.

It should settle down after a few weeks - but Dr sometimes start you on a low dose so that your body can get used it then and then increase the dose. As Northerner said if you continue to have trouble ask if you can try the slow release version "glucophage".

I had a quick google and found that some people with Lupus are treated with steroids. Steroids do push up blood sugar - but in non-diabetics the body copes. I am wondering if this is the link that your Dr referred to.

Have a good look around and ask as many questions as you need to.

Hi Val and welcome

I do know someone else who has the lupus, arthritis and diabetes (plus a few more) combination - and a whole cocktail of drugs to go with it.

I know that combination can make exercise difficult which makes it more difficult to control the diabetes.

Welcome to the forum Val! 🙂 x

Thank you for your warm welcome.
Yes i am on Metformin 500mg and i haven't increased to my full dosage as yet. I do feel so sick at night though and ever so dizzy so i am not sure as to why.
Beacontree Essex is where i live. No i am not on steroids for my lupus as yet only hydroxchloroquine.
I cannot do much exercise like you have mentioned Mark as i find every day a struggle sometimes.
I have lots of questions to ask so i will find my way around the forum first as you all seem a really friendly bunch.

Val x
