Hi Justine here my son was diagnosed in Sept 2010 he is 12 and I am still struggerling everyday x

Hi Justine, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis. There is such a lot to take in at first, but it will come in time. There are lots of parents here who can share their experience with you, so please don't be afraid to ask anything you are unsure of - nothing is considered 'silly' 🙂

What insulin regime is he on? You say you are struggling, how is he adapting to it? If you haven't already got a copy, I'd recommend Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. It will explain everything you need to know about living with Type 1 - an excellent book!

Also, there is another website that will be very helpful to you at

http://www.childrenwithdiabetesuk.org/

There are over 400 parents of Type 1 children there and what they don't know isn't worth knowing!

I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Hello Justine, I'm really sorry to hear of your son's diagnosis too.

I know there a many parents on the forum who I'm sure you can share experiences with and help give you some support.

Being a type 2 and single, I'm afraid I cannot help you much, but I'd like to welcome you to the forum, nonetheless.

Best wishes,

Andy 🙂

hi justine welcome to the forum x🙂

Hi Justine and welcome x

Hi Justine, welcome to the forum. It can be really difficult to say out loud that you are struggling with diabetes. I found myself trying to be really together and learning everything, and trying to understand what seemed so simple to everyone else when I was grieving for my son's freedom and childhood! My younger son was dxd Oct '09 aged 9. There is so much to learn and so many changes to implement at home, at school, sports, friends houses etc.

It is okay to feel overwhelmed, and to feel sad and angry, too sometimes. It is also important to ask questions again and again until you understand, or feel comfortable with the answers.

And sometimes it just helps to talk to others who have gone through a similar thing to you. This forum has helped me so much in the past couple of months with questions about D, silly jokes, and discussions which have nothing to do with D!!

Hang in there, I believe it gets easier in time.

How does your son feel about his diagnosis? Once my boys had met other children with D, they chilled out a lot!

Welcome to the forum 🙂

Hi Justine and welcome to the forum.

I was diagnosed at 18 and I know my mum took it very badly to begin with, so I can only imagine what it was like for you:(

hummpphh years later and mum still worries about me, although she has had the relative luxury that I was already an adult (no comments!) at diagnosis and so was able to look after myself.

Fandange's wonderfully supporting comments are typical of what you can expect from this forum, so you have definitely come to the right place.

I think the important thing to remember is that your son can lead a long and healthy life with diabetes. Sure, there will be frustrating times, maybe even scary times, but those times happen to people in all walks of life, whether diabetic or not.

Good luck to both of you in coming to terms with D and learning how to live your lives with it, rather than in fear of it. 🙂

Hi Justine,
my 12 year old son was diagnosed in December 2009 and we have had some pretty bad times since then - but mostly good. Just come out of a bad patch which seemed horrendous (days of 30+ BG and two hospital stays), but much better now.I only found this forum a few weeks ago and the support has been fantastic.
