Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone

just thought would like to say hello. I have recently (November 2010) been diagnose type 2 diabetic after a couple of years of progressively becoming more and more debilitated (I think the Docs thought I was making it up). in the end my daughter paid for me to have a private consultation in London the bloods came back showing high blood sugars and impaired liver function. I took these results back to my NHS GP and consultant next day in the diabetic clinic came away with my gluco meter, Metformin and Gliclozide!! still trying to find my way around everything not sure if I'm relieved, scared or just plain mad!!!
have spent a couple o days reading various contributions all of which seem to be very down-to-earth and helpful - thanks
would someone please tell me that this is manageable and that I can have my life back

Hi hilo, welcome to the forum 🙂 Yes, diabetes is manageable, and many people find that they actually feel much healthier after diagnosis once they are getting treatment and given the spur to modifying their diet and activity levels.

There are lots of people with lots of experience here, so please do ask anything that may be concerning you - nothing is considered 'silly' here!

Take a look at the Useful Links:

for some good reading matter. Good diabetes management is all about education. It can be complicated, so start with the basics and learn as you go. I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Hi Hilo and welcome to the forum. Yes they tell me this is manageable, not quite figured it all out myself yet but I am slowly getting there I think hehe

hi Hilo.... welcome to the forum. I was diagnosed early in January so I know how you feel... all very confusing:confused: but people on here are so supportive and knowledgeable..... so just ask if you have any questions.

the recommended book by Gretchen Becker 'the first year type 2 diabetes' is brilliant if you fancy some bedtime reading lol

it seems that getting to grips with diabetes is a huge trial and error sort of thing ... what works for one person might not work for others.... but at least you know that you are not alone 🙂

Welcome to the forum hilo.

I was diagnosed in October, 2009. I too was in a right state, very overweight (obese) and had the physical capacity of an unfit 70 year old (I exaggerate for effect!).

Now, I am towards the top of the normal weight range and can report that I have the physical capacity of an average 47 year old. I am off all medication and my blood sugars are under control. So, with a bit of luck and given a bit of time, you might be able to do the same (assuming you have any weight to lose too - big assumption on my part).

Andy 🙂

p.s. I wonder why your GP didn't take you seriously? I hope you gave them what for when you got your private diagnosis!

Hi Hilo,

I have only just joined this forum after being diagnosed in Oct last year. They are all very friendly and tell you 'how it is' . very helpful indeed.
I feel that I am sort of getting it all organised and do feel healthier. I exercise a lot and feel great after it... swimming is my thing... and I am quite strict on myself about what to eat, it seems to be paying off.

Good luck !

Hi Hilo

Welcome to the forum. You have come to the right place to get friendly, help and support from other people like yourself🙂

Hi-Lo Hilo and welcome to the forum🙂

There is a lot to take in, but you will get accustomed to it, especially with the help and support offered by this forum.
Diabetes is absolutely manageable - if you want to manage it!!

PS. I would have thought that you have a strong argument for getting your local surgery to pay for the private treatment you took, in light of their lack of diagnosis (aka. disinterest).

PPS. Don't forget everyone that Boots and LLoyds pharmacies have been offering free checks for a few years now .....
Whilst not necessarily conclusive, it may help convince your local NHS to explore further.

Hi
many thanks for your encouraging words - yep weight is a major problem - I think the GP did not take me seriously because he believed I was depressed - (I am widowed and have had a fairly tough time over the last few years!!) I don't think he heard how desperate I was to re-engage with my life and saw my distress as a result of my bereavement not the desperation I felt a trying to get and feel better. haven't dealt with him yet just want to use energy to get better first!!!

Yes, but you are only 21 aren't you Andy?

Hi Hilo,

I was diagnosed in September and with the help of all the good folks on this site, am coming to terms with it.

I hope you find it as comforting as I have.

Hilo,

Exercise and diet is the answer, cut out all the fat things, cakes, chips etc and walk if you are not interested in other forms of exercise. I swim, and find it a great exercise and if you go at the same time each day ( I go 8.30 am) I meet the same people and have made lots of friends. A cheery wave as you go in is such a spirit booster.

Go for it, exercise is fun.... honest !!!

many thanks

how glad am I that this site exists with all you wonderful people on it - I'v had the best day yet since the dreaded diagnosis - I'v ordered the book reccomended, booked an introduction at the gym (not sure how wise that was, it may be the end of me) never mind nothing ventured nothing gained!!! but most of all feel a little shoot of hope many many thanks
