Hi Amy, it must be hard being freshly diagnosed at such a crucial point in your life..........

The fact you have came here has given you the best chance of being able to get your head round things by realising your not alone and that diabetes can be managed relatively easy...........

Browse the forum and ask as many questions as you can, let us take some of the pressure off so you can get stuck into the college work..........:D

Welcome Amy. Life's not just about diabetes - although it can feel like that.

What are you studying at college? What do you like doing? What would you like to do in future? Lots of questions, I know, but answers will help us to help you.

Hi Amy, welcome to the forum 🙂 I've had it just over two years and still find it hard at times too. I think there will always be times when it gets in the way or doesn't behave, but hopefully as time goes on and your knowledge and understanding improves it will become more of an aoccasional inconvenience.

I think one of the best things I have done is find this place. One of the hardest things to deal with can be the lack of real understanding that others have about diabetes and what it means to people - however well-intentioned and caring they may be. That is where coming here makes such a difference - you can laugh, moan, rant and rave and share all your experiences with others who 'get it'! 🙂 We've also met up 'in real life' and I can tell you that everyone is so friendly and wonderful so hopefully you will one day be able to join in on a meet.

Looking forward to hearing more from you, whatever it is we'll try our best to help and put a smile on your face! 🙂

p.s. Have a look at the Useful Links at the top of the Newbies section - the Ragnar Hanas book is brilliant!

Welcome to the forum Amy,

I'm sure that you'll get lots of good advice and help here.

Andy 🙂

Welcome Amy. Life's not just about diabetes - although it can feel like that.

I am currently studying Health and Social Care, Art and English. At the moment we're doing a project in health and social about diseases, so i chose to base it on diabetes thinking it would help me, but to be honest it just scares me even more... but then also helps that i can put my own views and feelings about it down in writing.
I realise that why i'm feeling this way is more than likely to be because of my age more than the diabetes, but its a factor that doesn't really help much lol. I've found that since having the diabetes my skin has gotten quite bad, my mood just changes rapidly ( i wouldn't want to have to face me when i have a low blood sugar) and i just feel down. I don't want to feel different to everyone else, and have found that since being diagnosed i have definitely cut back on the things that i love doing the most. Before being diagnosed i used to do a lot of dance and trampolining and get involved in all of the drama activities..but now i tend to hold back. I haven't done any dance since being diagnosed...and i know its wrong to not carry on with what i like doing just because of the illness.
I've recently started going running with my neighbours 🙂 and trying to get my blood sugars perfect and eat all of the right foods. I think that its working, the excercising is calming me down a bit and making me a bit more relaxed, and also doing wonders for my skin! which is great because its giving me a bit more confidence. Hopefully if i continue with all of this it will really help me to be more confident in myself and make me have more strength to believe that i can control the diabetes.
Hopefully, when i'm older i would like to go into a nursing career, to help other people that are suffering with illnesses, because i know what it like.
Thankyou for all your responses 🙂 i really appreciate the help and its really nice to be able to talk to other people in the same position as me, as i'm not really friends with anybody who has diabetes.

Hello Amy. Although I have been diabetic for nearly 20 years, it is only during the past few years that I have started to take diabetes seriously. I have found it quite a struggle, and seriously demoralising at times. I'm telling you this as I did find a way to make coping a little easier.

The first time I found real relief was when I attended a diabetes education course at my local hospital. Having the chance to meet other people with diabetes, and share some experiences, was very rewarding. It was so helpful to know that I was not alone.

Since attending the course, I have been looking for another way to meet fellow diabetics. Luckily for me, a new support group has been started in my home town of Nottingham. If you are feeling overwhelmed, and perhaps alone in dealing with this new condition, I would heartily recommend seeking some support from others like yourself.

If this is of interest, I would like to point you in the direction of Diabetes UK. They have a directory of local support groups, and hopefully you will find one close to you.

Go here: http://www.diabetes.org.uk/Get_involved/Supporting-each-other/Voluntary-groups/ and put your postcode in the box on the right.

Also, if you haven't done so already, ask about any diabetes education courses held at your local hospital. I found it to be an invaluable experience. Not just in terms of meeting others, but also in learning how to better control this frustrating condition.

I hope that you can find a way to better cope. Good luck.
