Hi, I'm Opal and have recently been diagnosed with pre diabetes. We have a lot of family with diabetes so I thought i was prepared for when I heard the words. However all I was told was "watch your glucose and retest in 3 months." Thankfully I knew a little more and have been following a Mediterranean style diet as well as researching and listening to family members. Looking forward to some help and advice in a friendly place. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forum, at least you were sort of prepared for the news but non the less it can be a shock. It is good you were already looking at a dietary approach which is usually fairly a healthy option.
The main thing is to watch your carbohydrate intake as it is all carbs which convert to glucose so reducing portions of high carb foods is often all that is needed. Were you told the actual number of your HbA1C test result as depending how close you are to the top of the zone 42-47mmmol/mol will indicate how much you will need to do.
You may find this link helpful as there are some menu plans and good information about managing the condition. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

Hi @Opal and welcome to the forum - some tweaks to your diet will definitely help - there are many users here who have gone through a similar process who will be able to provide great advice - glad you have found us

Hi @Opal and a very warm welcome from me too 🙂. Glad you decided to join, I'm sure you'll find it really useful as there are lots of friendly members who are happy to share experiences and advice.

Welcome to the forum @Opal
Lots of good advice given already. Some of which you may be aware of, with several family members with diabetes. Have a good look around the forum and ask any questions you have. Nothing considered silly or trivial. We have all been Newbies, although there is decades of experience to draw on.
I have found everyone to be helpful and supportive, but still consider myself to be a Newbie in many ways. I have learned a lot but still aware of how much I am still learning.

Sorry to hear you’ve been given the news you had half-expected might come your way at some point - still a shock when it arrives though isn’t it :(

Good to hear you’ve already hit the ground running 🙂

If you’d like to fill in any gaps in your background info, you might want to register for the newly updated Learning Zone - the orange tab in the main menu. Which you can tailor to give you the information that’s right for you.

Thank you all for the welcome. I wasn't told a number but I can access some of my notes through the NHS app and can see HbA1c42, which hopefully means I can diet control this for a while. Sadly its very likely I will be diabetic type 2 at some point as all the women in my family on both sides are diabetic. However the longer I can stay diet controlled the better! Thank you for the advice - off to do some reading now.

Welcome @Opal

It is not a given that you will become Type 2 if you take action now. I think may GPs are very negative as they sometimes don't acknowledge how powerful diet can be at keeping people off medication and being able to manage the condition well, Hence we see people who have in the past been given poor or no dietary advice which could have prevented a deteriorating condition.
There will be people for who it will not be sufficient and they will need medication.

That really is not true - if the women in your family had been given the correct and essential information of low carb eating they might never have become diabetic.
It is so sad that the NHS seems content to be dealing with the consequences of its own bad advice - I faced a barrage of 'healthy eating' information plus insults and accusations from my 20s up until diagnosed at 65.
I am coming up to my 74th birthday and low carb is still keeping me younger than my years.
