I was diagnosed last August with a number of 92. My number in November was 55 and my January number was 45. I wondered if anyone had tried the soup and shake diet that you can go on? I am currently on a very strict cut back that I introduced last August. My gp has completed an application form for the soups and shakes.

Hi @Forest and welcome to the forum - not my area of expertise I'm afraid so I can't offer any advice regarding this, but I'm sure someone will come along and help - we're a friendly bunch

Hi @Forest and welcome to the forum!
If you go to the search bar at the top right of the forum and put in 'soups and shakes' you'll see quite a few posts and threads form users who have either gone on the diet or are considering it. Is there any specific information that you're looking for?

Usually the soups and shakes regime is aimed at those who have high HbA1C and have a lot of weight to lose to give them a kick start into changing their diet so I'm not sure how much benefit they would be to you when you have already been pretty successful in reducing your HbA1C from a high level 92 to one 45 which if you are not on medication would be considered as being in remission if that is maintained for 2 consecutive tests.
@Drummer gave the Soups and Shakes a go a while ago and it actually increased her HbA1C.
Following a more sustainable low carb regime would be better for long term management of blood glucose. This link may help with some ideas. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

@Forrest as Leadinglights noted, I was expecting/hoping to see weightloss and a lower Hba1c doing shakes - but first I found three shakes were too much carb - and I was hungry on two shakes. I tried one shake and a small meal and fasting for 22 hours a day.
When tested, after two months on the diet, my Hba1c was 48, so I tried to return to my former regime of eating twice a day and staying under 40gm of carbs mainly from salad, veges and occasionally berries. I think the carbs in the shakes were too easy to digest. Possibly the fasting did not suit me.
I have really found it difficult to go back to two meals a day. After two months not eating first thing I tend to find something to do on the way to the kitchen and never get there - so often don't eat until 6pm - even later than when on the diet.
I am trying to be stricter, doing more shopping so there are things to eat again, but once a habit is broken I find it very difficult to restore. I'm annoyed with myself as I suspect that I have put back all the lost weight and more - the usual tale of woe for everyone after a low calorie diet.

@pjgtech has recently been documenting his experiences of the Soup and Shake remission programme here:

Several members have found it a very helpful strategy over the years, but it doesn’t suit everyone 🙂

I basically wanted to see if you can loose weight with them. Plus to they affect going to the toilet.

Hi @Forest, welcome to the Forum 🙂. I don't have any experience with the soups and shakes but hopefully you'll get some further info from our helpful and friendly members who have tried these.

I did lose some weight - but have regained it I am sure - I always did when on low calorie diets.
When doing the diet I rarely had anything to get rid of - but I wasn't at all concerned.
When I stopped having the shakes and had just one meal a day I ate a little more plant stuff than usual - I usually have stir fries, stews, salads, and in a week or so things were more normal, but I have never been one to be concerned about being 'regular'.

Thanks to everyone who posted a reply. After giving it some thought, I have decided to not do the soup and shake diet. I feel my nurse wasn't completely honest/accurate as she said I could simply replace one meal a day with either a shake or soup. She also stated it would only be for 12 weeks. There was no mention of daily weight checks or blood pressure monitoring. I think I have the will power to continue what I am already doing. My number is now 45 so very close to the target. Have a phone call appointment booked for Friday eve with the nurse (the first one since my diagnosis last August). I have managed this far on my own so plan to continue on my own. No doubt she will want to take an interest and possibly discuss feet etc. Thanks again everyone. I look forward to reading how everyone is doing x

Hi @Forest , you seem determined and motivated to carry on with your own regime so probably the right decision not to try the soups and shakes diet. Hope the appointment goes well today, keep us updated 🙂

I have claimed over and over that I do not overeat and never have done, but there's always 'that look' - I am sure that many others will have seen it.
Long before diagnosis I was actually called a liar when I had appointments at the GP surgery on consecutive days and was weighed both times. I was heavier on the second one, having rehydrated after a long hot day in the factory, but I'd been too tired and distressed to eat after falling and hurting my ankle, however I was berated for the gluttony of drinking around 3 litres of water between the appointments.
That attitude is so strongly held it is impossible to deny it with the truth - but the shakes must be an easily absorbed carb as far as I am concerned - one shake and a small meal, 22 hours of fasting a day and my HbA1c was higher than I expected.

Thank you. Appointment went really well. Nurse said to keep up what I am doing as I am now in pre diabetic phase. Fingers crossed I can soon come off the medication. I am hoping to have lost 3 stone before August (within the year).

I don't want to have to weigh myself each day as I have found in the past it can be very disheartening. I also find some of the professionals rude - they state your weight is an issue and they are carrying extra pounds.
