Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi Everybody

And yet another new one to the forum. I live in Bradford West York?s and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 4 years ago. I take 1 x Aspirin and 1 x 10mg Ramprill in the mornings and 4x (just increased today from taking 3) metformin and 1 x simvastin in an evening.

Just back from the doctors for some blood test results, hence the increase in the metformin as my bloods were at 8 when tested on the 3rd September. Feeling fed up with myself as they tell me I am now on the max I can take in tablets.

Now not to sure about what I have just been told or weather its an old wives tale but somebody (a non medical person) has just told me that if I take daily after my evening meal 2 ? 3 tablespoons of Apple Cider Viniger that would bring my blood levels down, is this correct or is it a myth.

Kind Regards
Phil

Hi Phil, welcome to the forum from a fellow Tyke! I'm from Brighouse originally 🙂

You're not out of options on the medication front yet, as there are different types besides metformin that can be taken. It's also possible that you can improve your blood sugar control by modifying your diet and trying to fit in more exercise - I'd recommend that you take a look at the 'Useful Links' sticky at the top of the Newbies section for some reading material that may help. Even though it's not your first year, the Gretchen Becker book may prove useful - think of joining here as the start of your quest for better blood sugars! 🙂

I'm not sure about the Apple cider vinegar - there are a lot of myths and miracle 'cures' around, mostly unproven in proper medical trials. I'd stick to the things that are proven. Also, beware of people who seem to be highly qualified - I recently came across a so-called doctor who sells a very popular book about diabetes and discovered none of his qualifications were accredited - he is a quack!

If you have any concerns or questions, please let us know and we'll try our best to help out, or if you want to have a good old moan, that's allowed too! Look forward to hearing more from you.

Hi and a warm welcome to the forum dux x

Hi Phil,

I use apple cider vinegar and have done for quite some time - like you because I've heard that it helps the morning fasting level just a little bit. However, I couldn't tell you whether it does any good at all. However, please don't expect it to have any major effect on improving your bolood glucose levels because it certainly will not do that.

The best way to reduce your blood glucose levels is to cut back on the starchy carbohydrates - e.g. cereals, bread, potatoes, pizza, pasta, rice etc. Doing that usually leads to a big improvement - and quickly too.

You are at the stage that I was at when I started my improvement programmes two years ago - i.e. HbA1c of 8.5% and on 2000mg of metformin per day. These days I'm at 5.0% and currently on 1000mg of metformin per day and hoping that I might get off that altogether soon.

Believe me, things are often possible if you work at understanding the messages that you'll find on these forums.

Good luck and best wishes - John

Welcome to the forum Phil.

As Northerner and wallycorker say, I think that there may be other avenues to try before (or as well as?) the apple cider vinegar route (sounds a little quackish to me, but hey, if it works!).

Andy 🙂
