Hi,i've just been diagnosed with T2 a couple of days ago,so very new to all this.Looking forward to chatting with you all,and listening to any help you can offer.

Have you decided on an approach you might try to help you manage your glucose levels?

There are two main approaches to diabetes management that are popular on the forum (with many variants among them).

One approach is to focus on blood glucose management with a lower carbohydrate way of eating (typically less than 130g of total carbohydrates a day). Reducing portions of all carbohydrates, not just the obvious sweet and sugary things, but bread, pasta, potatoes, grains, rice, and many fruits. Many members using this approach find that weight reduces naturally as their glucose levels improve

Another is to focus on weight loss, particularly weight around the abdomen which can indicate visceral fat built up around organs like the liver and pancreas, stopping them working properly. Research has shown that significant weight loss can help ‘reboot’ the pancreas. Many members using this approach find that glucose levels improve naturally as their weight reduces - particularly if using a short term intervention such as the 800cal Newcastle Diet (now being rolled out as the NHS Path to Remission).

Of course there are some that use a combination approach too!

One of the things about diabetes is that it can be very individual. And the same approach may not appeal, or work as successfully for two different people - so it’s really a question of experimentation, and developing a ‘diabetes toolkit’ of strategies and approaches that work for you, and which you can sustain long-term 🙂

One of the contentious issues re.my diagnosis is that my weight is 56 kilo,completely in range for my height,and are slim framed,(that kinda threw the doctor a bit)so I was planning to control the carb content to keep my glucose levels under control. This I imagine,will be a case of trial and error initially,until I find a successful long term plan.Onwards and upwards!

Reducing carbs which is one approach usually leads also to weight loss which for many is what is needed. One way of maintaining weight is to make sure you eat plenty of protein and healthy fats to replace the energy source that would have been provided by the carbs which convert to glucose so doesn't help with blood glucose levels. It is a case of balancing your carb intake with the medications in particular the gliclazide.
