Your other post says that your HbA1c is 54, which is not far into diabetes territory. Many of us have been diagnosed with much higher numbers, sometimes in 3 figures, but by changing our diets, becoming more active and losing some weight (if necessary) have managed to turn things around and in many cases come off medication.

What changes have you made to your diet?

I’ve stopped eating sugar , bread and chocolate, biscuits etc I stick to having 1 meal a day that has carbs and eating lots of veg and have berries rather than sweets

Ditching the sweet stuff is good, although if you like it extra dark chocolate (70% or higher) it's generally considered to be OK. I have a square or two of 85% dark most days.

What carbs are you having with your carb meal? Is it potatoes, rice or pasta as they are all high carb and portion size is important. Root veggies, eg carrot, are higher carb than green veg.

Berries are a good choice.

I have posted a link in your other thread which may help as you are being quite restrictive but perhaps not going for the best choice with pasta which is high carb and then adding bread which is also high carb.

Welcome to the forum @salt n pepper lady

Sounds like you’ve made some significant changes to your menu, and are really trying to turn your diabetes around. Well done!

Do make sure that the changes you are making are sustainable for you long term. Ideally you will be able to evolve your way or eating into one which is flexible, enjoyable, sustainable, and keeps your weight and your BG levels where you would like them.

Have you got a follow-up appointment arranged? Sometimes it helps to let your changes bed-in for 3 months or so, because the HbA1c measures changes in red blood cells, and more frequent checks have a degree of overlap.

Thank you , I’ve had a link that I’ve looked at and has some really good tips and advice, I’m new to all of this but I’m so glad I found this forum as it’s helping me to understand the science behind eating , I have a follow up in October, I’m hoping that i will have made some good healthy eating habits for life by then and possibly be in remission, that’s my goal at least , I gave up smoking 13 years ago and was in a mindset that it was ok to have a pkt of biscuits or a bag of sweets as ccompensation, how wrong I was .

Hope that your reading and determination see a reduction in your BG levels around meals, and an encouraging drop in HbA1c by October.

The before/after checks that have been suggested are a great way of building a flexible and enjoyable menu, with portion sizes tweaked to where your body can cope with the carbohydrate content of your meals. Aiming for a ‘meal rise’ of no more than 2-3mmol/L at the 2hr mark allows you to tweak favourite meals, and try portion reductions or lower-carb swaps until your body can metabolise the meal efficiently 🙂
