Type 2
Hi everyone, I was diagnosed with type 2 around 18 months ago. The sugar level in my blood (can't remember what it's called H something) is 79. I'm taking Metformin and Dapagliflozin. I have also recently started taking Fenugreek as I read that it helps lower the blood glucose levels.
I joined this group as I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm obviously eating the wrong things. I've had very little support from my surgery and every nurse I see tells me a different thing. I'm starting to get a bit depressed which I really want to avoid. I sit all day at a sewing machine and don't get any other time for exercise as I'm also a carer for my husband. This sounds very self pitying and I don't want to come across that way but can anyone point me in the right direction for nutritional advice and foods that are a definite no no please? I'm only around a stone overweight and quite happy with my size but totally lost! Help!

Hi @woogalie That would be your HbA1C 🙂 If that’s a recent one, it seems to have stayed around the same for a couple of years:

Could you give us an idea of an average day’s food for you?

Hi there, well I eat cereal and bob milk for breakfast, shredded wheat, Weetabix or porridge with sweetener. I have a small pot of nuts and raisins at tea break. A wrap with cheese or crab sticks and salad, an apple and a satsuma for lunch, a pear or maybe a small bag of cheddars for afternoon snack and a meal in the evening which is usually salad with a small portion of potatoes. I drink sugar free squash and tea (no sugar) throughout the day.

Welcome to the forum @woogalie

Sorry to hear you feel you’ve not had much support from your surgery. :(

Sounds like you’ve been trying to make some positive changes to your menu, but perhaps a few more tweaks might help balance your glucose levels with the meds you are taking.

Dried fruit like raisins can be rammed full of fast-acting natural sugars, so you might find it better to go for a pot of mixed nuts and seeds, and drop the dried fruits?

I like a wrap for a lunch option, but I’ve noticed that some are 30g of carbs, while others are 20g of carbs. If I can stick to one 20g wrap that ends up being a much lower carb load than a sandwich (and just as satisfying). But 2x bigger wraps could be 3x the carbs!

New potato season is upon us! And those are generally kinder on BGs than older / main crop ones. And it sounds like you are being careful with portion sizes - which is a vital component too!

For breakfast, many T2s here find cereals quite challenging. An alternative is to switch the proportions a little and have a bowl which is largely greek style yoghurt and berries (either frozen or fresh if in season), and then a sprinkle of granola / muesli for texture and crunch. The change of proportions seems to make it much easier on BG levels, and it’s still a quick and satisfying go-to.

Some get on OK with porridge. But for others it’s like rocket fuel, despite the ‘slow release’ reputation.

If you have time in the morning, eggs are the go to for a low carb option. I usually have a 2 egg cheese omelette, or bacon and eggs if I have time. As regards fruit, berries are the best for us T2s. I often have a pudding of strawberries, chopped nuts and double cream. Tastes like a proper posh pud for minimal carbs. Don't be afraid of fats...if you reduce your carbs you need more fats to keep you feeling full, unless you have a condition which requires you to go low fat.
I sometimes make a "wrap" out of lettuce leaves. It's a bit trickier to eat that a wheat one, but it's really low carb!

Do have a look at this link as it will give you lots of ideas for meals which are low carb so should give you some more options. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
It is important to recognise what are high carb foods which should only be had in small portions if at all whilst you get your blood glucose down.
