Hello everyone,

I have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes since 2016 and basically apart from my blood tests to check my Ha1bc, I have pretty much been left to my own devices which in hindsight was not a good idea due to my mental health issues.

My last ha1bc result was 128 which I have been told is way too high and I need to start taking control more.
I am on metformin and both rapid acting and long last insulin injections but I seriously want to try and get more control of my diabetes now.

To this end, I am going to try a Mediterranean Meal Planner but being on benefits, not sure if I can maintain it.

Anyway, that is my hello to you all 🙂

Dai

Hi, Dai - welcome to the Forum. You're not alone is saying that you've been left to your own devices. It's a comment we get to see a lot on here, but at least you've come to a place where the advice you need is readily available from people managing their diabetes day-by-day, including many T2s on insulin. If you have any questions please just ask.

As you say, 128 is way too high but many of us have come down from an HbA1c in 3 figures through a combination of diet, exercise and (where needed) shedding some pounds, with many adopting a Mediterranean diet regime or at least, as in my case, elements of it. Hopefully you can manage it too.

Welcome to the forum.
People like to have a fancy diet with a fancy name, but the truth is that we Type 2 diabetics (even those in remission like me) can't handle the amount of carbohydrates in the modern diet even starches are digested into glucose in the bloodstream. There are several paths to T2D remission, but the easiest one (for most) is low carb.

Here's a link to the blog post which set me on my path to T2D remission:

Once you have looked at the meal planner and got a good idea of the food types and combination you could just adapt it to 'mediterranean style', basically concentrating on non-starchy veg, eggs, meat, grains, and healthy oils. This may give a little wriggle room in your budget.
Remember all vegetables count - fresh or frozen.

Remember that carbs raise your blood sugars. Carbs are high in cereals, starchy veg (eg potatoes etc) and in anything made with flour (bread, pastry, cake, biscuits etc). It's good to get in the habit of checking the nutritional information on the back of food packaging (the 'per 100 grams' list).

Hello, I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes with an hba1c of 80. After 3 months on metformin and dieting my bg had not gone down. I suggested a blood test for the antibodies that kill off the beta cells in Type 1 and it came back positive. Now I'm getting good treatment and on type 1 insulin 5times a day. My hba1c has gone down to 60 and with the help of a CGM I'm sure I'll get it down further. Ask your GP for the antibody blood test. It's worth a try. Was in my case. Good luck

Hi Dai,
David Unwin a GP has been very successful with low carbs, around 150 patients in remission. Here is his diet sheet for comparison with your Mediterranean Meal Planner. Watch this video for the full story.
