At risk of diabetes
Hi Everyone. A newbie here. Just a few questions regarding fruit and vegetables. Are plums and nectarines okay to eat and what about carrots? I’m classed as pre diabetic - last test result was 47.

Hi @Glo65 and welcome to the forum!

Everything is 'okay' in moderation - it's all about making mindful decisions and thinking about quantities. I'm sure a few of the forum veterans will soon share their go-to fruit and veg, but meanwhile you might find some useful information here on fruit and portions. Any questions - don't hesitate to ask!
Thanks so much for your reply and will definitely look at the link .

Carrots are fairly low carb and raise blood sugar gradually, especially if raw.

Hi @Glo65 and welcome to the forum.
Since you are only pre diabetic, your body may be OK with most fruit. However, that was not the case for me when diagnosed with an HbA1C not such a lot higher than yours. Type 2 diabetics are a diverse bunch and some of us react more to certain carbohydrates and natural sugars than others.

Tropical fruit and all fruit juices are a problem for me, in fact these days I rarely eat fruit except for berries (strawbs, rasps and blackberries). I find blueberries are often too sweet for me.
I also avoid high carb veg such as potato, sweet potato, parsnip and even carrot (before diagnosis I used to eat several raw carrots per day and also bananas - shudder).

The only way to really know which foods don't suit your body is to get a Blood Glucose meter and test them, but for an average person (unlike me) the Glycaemic Index and Glycaemic Load of items can give you a clue about how much and how fast they will raise blood glucose. Note that some carbs are 'worse' than table sugar (GI 65) compared with mashed potato at a GI of 83 !

Everybody responds different so what may be OK for one person won't be for somebody else and will depend on may factors, what you eat it with, how much you have, 1 plum may be fine but 3 wouldn't, similarly carrots, a large portion of just carrots may be too many carbs but if you also have green veg they will be fine.
The book or app Carbs and Cals is a good recourse for giving portion sizes and carb values which helps you make better choices.
This link has some good ideas for modifying your diet with some menu plans and dos and don'ts. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

@Glo65 As you are not high in the diabetes range of HbA1c numbers it might be easier to look at your intake of high carb foods such as potatoes and grains, even the 'healthy' ones as they can be easy targets for change.
Fruit juices and the highest carb content fruits might be best avoided for a while, to get your HbA1c into normal numbers, but I can managed berries and lower carb fruits several times a week.

Will definitely look into buying a blood glucose meter, thank you
