I am new to Diabetes UK. I was diagnosed last November with mmol 49. I stopped eating direct sugar completely and Last month level came down to 46. I want to learn about natural sugar. I am confused how to eat with diabetes

Welcome @rasikadeepali 🙂 It’s not just sugar you have to watch, it’s all carbs, including non-sweet carbs like bread, potatoes, rice, etc. Exercise is good too, even just having regular walks.

Welcome @rasikadeepali - you will find so much valuable information here on how to manage your diabetes. There is always someone to advise you on any problem you encounter. As for me a really valuable aid was a book called Carbs and Calorie Counter. It gives comprehensive information on the carb content of a host of foods. I find this book invaluable ….Good luck

I found the Carbs and Cals book was and is my bible for making decisions about my food choices. Also you may find this link gives you some good ideas for continuing the good work you have already done. Good explanation about which foods to keep a watchful eye on and which ones are low carb on which to base meals.

I use Freshwell a lot for recipes and information. Am going to make the pancakes with coconut flour for brunch today….first time for this recipe…..

Also do you think I can eat things like raisins and dates. I am like if I could mix them in my yoghurt

Dates quite high in carbs. Why not put a few fresh berries in your yoghurt?

Take each meal and look to see where you can reduce the amount of carbohydrate (carbs). This might mean swapping dates for fresh berries, having a smaller portion of potatoes, pasta or rice, or even changing what you eat completely in order to reduce the carbs.

Do you eat meat or are you vegetarian?

I avoid dried fruit because, as @Inka has said, it's very high carb and almost all of it is sugar. A couple of medjool dates, for example, is a whopping 30g carb or thereabouts, more than I aim for in an entire meal. Many of us have berries for breakfast as they are generally recognised as the healthiest fruits, due in part to their plant pigments, as well as being the lowest carb.

All sugar, all carbohydrate is natural - but as a type 2 diabetic, it is something to limit as it is what elevates blood glucose levels.
As your HbA1c is only just in diabetic levels a few alterations or restrictions should be effective for lowering numbers to normal numbers.

Thanks Martin. Do you think how much carbs I should have? My goal is to reduce weight
Unfortunately there's no simple answer to your question as we all differ in how our T2 bodies handle carbs. Many of us follow a low carb diet, which is generally considered to be less than 130g per day. Many go lower than that and some much lower. As your HbA1c is in the pre-diabetic range you should be able to bring that down by simply reducing your portions of things like bread, pasta, rice and potatoes whilst cutting back (or out) sugary things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and most breakfast cereals. Whether that would reduce your weight as well I can't say, but I lost weight on low carb although my primary aim was to get my HbA1c down. Members who have gone for weight-reduction strategies would be better able to advise.

If i were you I'd try the Harcombe Diet. You could also have a look at the Freshwell Low Carb project and Public Health Collaboration if that's where Dr David Unwin's diet sheets are available.

Those two approaches seem very similar, I looked at the Harcombe Diet and as described very much follows Jason Fung's theory in his book The Diabetes Code which I found made complete sense.

I wondered exactly the same when I was first diagnosed @rasikadeepali

Whether table sugar could be swapped for honey, or sweetness could be achieved by adding dried fruit etc. Because this would be ‘natural’…

But pretty soon I realised that (despite portrayals in the media and food labelling’s obsession with “of which sugars”) there really isn’t any significant difference as far as the body is concerned between sucrose/table sugar, and the carbohydrate in whole grain cereals, flour, and the like. The body just breaks them down (very efficiently) into molecules of glucose.

So now I just look at the overall carbohydrate content, and use that as my guide.

Obviously if something has a bunch of extra sugar added, the total carb content goes up… but using total carbs is much clearer for me with things like breakfast cereals which can have very low ‘of which sugars’ but can be very high in carbs and my body treats them like rocket fuel - even if they have quite high fibre content!

I made the Freshwell Coconut pancakes. I did like them as I like coconut but the texture is very dry and ‘cake like’. I would make them again but would like to find a way to make them more moist without having to use yogurt or cream on top!
