Welcome to the forum @Rachelegypt

Glad you have found us! Was this found as part of a routine health check, or had you been feeling that things weren’t quite right for a while? Do you have anyone who lives with T2 diabetes in your close family?

It can be helpful to know the result of your HbA1c check - this is likely to be a number between 42-47mmol/mol. Knowing how close you are to a diagnosis at 48mmol/mol or above can guide you as to the extent of the adjustments you may need to make.

There are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, but you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits. That doesn’t mean you have to avoid those things entirely, but being careful about portion sizes, and adjusting the proportion of things on your plate can be an extremely powerful strategy.

Good luck, and let us know how things go 🙂

Some modest changes may be all that is needed, cutting out some high carb foods and reducing portions of others. Making the carbs you have worth it for flavour and enjoyment rather than 'empty' carbs which are often carriers for other lower carb foods.
The book or app Carbs and Cals is a useful resource for giving carb values for a whole range of portion sizes of a variety of foods and meals so helps make better choices and of course the total carbohydrate amount in the nutritional information on packets etc and on the internet.
This link may help you with some ideas for modifying your diet. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

Welcome, you will find good advice and friendly people here
I'm only got diagnosed pre-diabetic at the start of february (also diagnosed high cholesterol & confirmed kidney problems on the same day), so I totally understand the shock.
I'd say make the most important changes initially (cakes, biscuits, other sugary food), then work out foods to switch to as an ongoing change rather than try to work out everything on day 1 (which was my kneejerk reaction 🙄)

Thanks to all of you. I’m going to find the book carbs and cals. I’ve been cutting back on gf bread and no potatoes. I do miss chips lol. Can you have a slice of bread at all? Dark dairy free chocolate? A square? I’m menopause too

Some people tolerate bread some do not all that well, there are some lower carb breads in the supermarkets if you look.
Dark chocolate is OK, no need for dairy free. Aldi Moser Roth ones are pretty nice. Just factor into your carbs for the day. /

I have cut back on my carbs for two weeks now. I have been intermittent fasting for about two weeks. I feel better and have downloaded the freshwell app? Is that the right word? I am going to try chickpea pasta tonight with chicken and homemade pasta sauce. Hubby is very supportive

Just check the carbs on the chickpea pasta and watch your portion size. Otherwise sounds good.
I use edamame bean or black bean pasta as it is much lower in carbs than most of the other pastas. 15g per 100g dry weight.

Read the packet timings on the pasta, if I remember correctly it barely needs any time at all
