Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi . I'm new to this forum.
I have had type2 diabetes for 2years.
I live on my own and try really hard to watch what I eat.
I was put on metformin 2000mg a day ,but it made me feel really ill. I decided to come off all meds and just change my life style.
After 3 months my sugars and cholesterol had gone down. I was then left for 6months before taking another blood test, which showed both had gone back up.
Back to the drawing board I decided to go bk on metformin but only taking 500mg daily.
I take care of myself better now.eg eating, exercise and wearing diabetic socks!!
Glad I've joined this group . Will let you know my next test results .

Welcome to the forum
Some people think they have a healthy diet but it is often still too high in carbohydrates to be effective at reducing blood glucose. Have a look at this link to see how it compares with what you are doing as there may be some ideas for trimming some carbs from your diet. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

Hi @Rosered and welcome 🙂 This forum is a great resource and source of inspiration. I've just had a few months "offline" due to personal issues, but I do keep lurking for motivation! I'm back on the low-carb wagon after visiting the forum on and off recently. Very best wishes and hope you find it as motivating as I do

Welcome to the forum @Rosered

Sorry to hear your levels crept up between checks :(

That is one of the snags of only getting those 3-6 monthly updates - it’s hard to get a feel for your direction of travel until you get the next result.

Many T2s on the forum choose to self-fund a glucose meter (there are relatively affordable ones like the Spirit Tee 2 which has strips for approx £10 a pot). That allows them to see how things are going and fine-tune their meal choices.

You can use a BG meter, taking a reading just before eating and again 2hrs after the first bite, to see what the differences are. Ideally you would want to see a ‘meal rise’ of no more than 2-3mmol/L at the 2hr mark. Once you can see how you respond to different meals you can begin experimenting with reducing portion sizes of the carbs where you see bigger rises, or perhaps swapping to a different type. You might find that you are particularly sensitive to carbohydrate from one source (eg bread), but have more liberty with others (eg oats or basmati rice) - It’s all very individual! You might even find that just having things at a different time of day makes a difference - with breakfast time being the trickiest.

Over weeks and months of experimentation you can gradually tweak and tailor your menu to find one that suits your tastebuds, your waistline, your budget and your BG levels - and a way of eating that is flexible enough to be sustainable long-term. 🙂

It can give you an idea of the overall direction of travel in your glucose levels between your official HbA1c checks.

Are the socks something your doctor advised? Most diabetics don’t wear special socks
