Welcome to the forum
Would you like to say a bit about your diagnosis, what is your HbA1C and are you on any medication as that will help to know where you are at.
Have a look around the forum as there is lots of information and links but do make sure they are appropriate for you as there are people who manage their condition in a variety of way.

Doctor wants to not use meds as I have heart cholesterol and kidney problems slight back ground retinopathy. Trying to keep under control with diet very hard had this about a year got to 46 mml just risen since Xmas to 51 mml

That is not too bad being only a little way over the diagnostic threshold of 47mmol/mol so it should be very possible with dietary changes to bring it down again. Many find they have background retinopathy but it is clear at the next test especially if they get their blood glucose well managed.
Many find that a low carbohydrate approach is successful and can also help with reducing cholesterol. If you think that might suit you then have a look at this link for some ideas for modifying your diet.

There is new thinking that for people who are older that the HbA1C should be a bit more lenient and something more personalised taking into account other risk factors is more appropriate but I understand the desire to get into a lower range.

Thank you very helpful reply I did manage to get it down from year ago to 46mml then I think Christmas new year etc pushed it up I’ve been struggling border line few years before . The gps nurses give different views and advice one says because of heart disease and age that’s why you have diabetes . Other nurses say it’s reversable so gets confusing

The more appropriate term is remission not reversion and for some people that is possible with dietary changes that become a new way of eating however for others it may never happen but the important thing is not to go too far adrift and try to keep steady even if that is just a bit higher than you want and the 46mmol/mol would be considered pretty OK, though with the other risk factors then lower is desirable but not at the expense of causing stress.
If you look at the link I posted you may find some tweaks you can make to your diet.

Hi my number is 48 so quite high. I exercise and walk every day so was a shock to me. I have no signs so wondering if these measures are just to help me get the figure down. Thank you for you help and I will check the advice offered. I am a grazer !! so hummous and celery it is then. Seriously, I am keeping a daily diary of what I am eating at meal times and as I adore veg etc hope to get this number down. No medication I have just been given the diet plan etc to assist in the next 3 months then back for another bloodtest.

The nurses at doctors said one slice of bread only no potatoes seems harsh do you think sounds drastic or ok

Sounds sensible as you need to be reducing carb intake. There are many lower carb substitutes for potatoes. I don't have more than 1 carby veg at any one meal. I don't have rice or normal pasta.

Welcome to the forum @DPF

Sorry to hear your HbA1c has risen recently. Sounds like you have done well to keep your glucose levels relatively in check for a few years?

What strategies have you been using over the years? The two main approaches people on the forum use to help them manage their type 2 diabetes are to focus on either losing weight, or on reducing carbohydrates in their menu.

What matters most is finding a method that works for you as an individual, and which you can maintain long-term.

Good luck!

Humous is made from chickpeas, so it would be over the 10% limit I set for foods to keep my type 2 under control.
Your Hba1c level of 48 is actually quite low, and only just in the diabetes range, but you seem to have some misconceptions about levels and foods suitable to eat freely.
