Hi,

My name is Jess. I'm 28 and I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in December of 2022. I was on Metformin once per day for a year and then in December of 2023 my levels were low and stable enough for my GP to take me off of the medication and we are now waiting to see if I am in remission - fingers crossed!

I have lost almost 20KG since my diagnosis by changing up my diet quite significantly. I aim for about 150G of carbs per day (though on some days I'm closer to 200G :(). I have tried to reduce my carbs further, but I suffer from Chronic Fatigue syndrome and I find it's worsened when my carbs drop below the 150G mark.

Although I've been diagnosed for over a year I still find there's much I don't know, so I'm aiming to get a better understanding of the condition as I know even if I'm in remission this is something I'll be dealing with for the rest of my life.

Thanks!
Jess 🙂

Hello Jess @JessG123,

Well done on your great weight loss (those words have a nice feel to both writing and reading them!).

There is no surprise in you saying there is so much you don't know - I think that applies to all of us and most of the Health Care Practicioners (HCPs)! But you've found a good place to be looking and asking. We seem to not only have an accumulation of experience of living with diabetes (all sorts of D, some seemingly pretty obscure but a challenge nevertheless) but we try to share that experience in what I've found is a caring and non-judgemental manner.

Meanwhile Welcome to the Forum.

Hi @JessG123 (from another Jess) and welcome to the forum :D

That's amazing to hear about your weight loss and that hopefully you may be in remission! It sounds like you've put in lots of hard work and dedication towards your diabetes and diet, which is showing positive results.

Good luck with the upcoming test results, and hope that you receive the good news. We have plenty of information around remission on our website here if it can be helpful: https://www.diabetes.org.uk/diabetes-the-basics/type-2-remission. Also as said above, we have lots of knowledge on the forum and I'm sure others will jump in soon with advice. Please continue to reach out if you have certain Q's or anything!

living with diabetes is a education in itself i'm very new to this condition but there is a lot of information to be found here and there's a lot that can be learnt . congrats on the weight loss by the way and fingers crossed with the meds , and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum @JessG123

Wow! congratulations on your terrific weight loss - that’s a really inspirational achievement!

Hopefully it will have helped to reduce insulin resistance, and perhaps improved the function of your pancreas and signalling between organs in your abdomen.

We have a remission section on the forum where members share their experiences and attempts to reduce their HBA1c below 48mmol/L with no medication (the definition of remission in the DIRECT trial).

Did you have an HbA1c check in December when you came off Metformin?

Do you check your levels at home? Have you seen any differences in your levels over the past 6 weeks or so?

Hi!

Thank you! 🙂

My HbA1c in December was 41 (down from 59 at diagnosis).

I do check my levels at home, so far these are mostly consistent with what I was experiencing on the Metformin, so I hope that's a good sign! 🙂 I am due to have my HbA1c done again next month, so will know more then.

That sounds like a good indication that your HbA1c should be at a similar level. 🙂

Let us know how you get on 🙂
