Hi everyone,
Just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Still in the process of having additional tests as it seems I may have complications. I have to confess to being very anxious about everything to do with this diagnosis, but grateful to God for this forum. Thanks.

Welcome @tooneytr 🙂 It’s completely normal to be anxious but it will gradually get easier as you get used to things and gain experience.

Do you know what your HbA1C was at diagnosis? Have you been put on any medication?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. At diagnosis it was 51 and yes, I am on Metformin 500mg, 1 tablet a day. Also been put on Atorvastatin. Also having tests for kidney and liver as well.

That is not too bad as the threshold for diagnosis is anything over 47mmol/mol so you are not too far into the zone, I am surprised that your GP hasn't given you the opportunity to make some life style changes like diet and exercise before starting metformin as even with that you need to modify your diet. The atorvastatin is likely because your cholesterol is over the level which they like people to be at if diabetic. The other tests are usually routine so may be nothing of concern.
Many find a low carbohydrate approach successful in reducing blood glucose and losing weight if needed and this link may give you some ideas for that. https://www.freshwell.co.uk/
Getting down from 51 is very possible, I followed the principals in the link and reduced mine to 42 in 3 months with no meds.

Hi,

Thank you, that’s really helpful to know. The link you sent is really useful as well, I will checkout that website. I have already stated to lose some weight, but have a fair way to go. Many thanks.

Hi tooneytr. I’ve also been recently diagnosed in early October at a level of 52. I had a blood test yesterday and have managed to push it down to 45 by cutting out the cr@p and drastically reducing carbs. I’m hoping to get it down further and get myself out of the pre-diabetic range that I’ve managed to get to. Good luck! It’s hard work but can be done. Do you know when your next blood test will be?

Hi Mrsb8520,
Thanks for the encouragement, I did manage to make a very slight improvement with my last blood test, down to 50 but don’t know when my next blood test will be yet. How often should I be having blood tests? I don’t currently have any scheduled. It could be because the GP is checking out some other irregularities with my kidneys and liver at the moment.

In the early days it is usual to get a HbA1C every three months to check progress is being made thereafter 6 months and then every year. Not much good more often than 3 months as the test is an average over the previous 3 months so would not fully reflect changes being made.
So 3 months after diagnosis and if that looks good then after another 6 months and if things still good then every year.

Thanks very much, I had no idea about that. Thank you so much for taking the time to let me know.
