Good morning. I'm newly diagnosed with T2 diabetes after a A1C score of 63.

I've been put onto a twice daily dose
of Metformin, however on my first day of medication last week, i suffered a minor stroke which hasn't helped as my thought processes are now a bit confused.

Anyway I bought a blood glucose monitor which has given me a better idea of where i am but this morning i tested with a score of 2.9 which I read is not good, is this something that Metformin is doing or is my diet completely wrong. I ate pasta at 8pm last night and tested when i woke before breakfast.

Thanks and sorry for the long ramble

Metformin does not actively lower glucose.

That reading may have been erroneous? 2.9 is in hypo territory and not consistent with your hba1c.

Thanks for your reply. It did seem a strange reading especially as i felt perfectly fine. I had a sugary snack and tested again after 20 mins and blood sugar was 6.9.

Its going to take a while for me to get used to this but I'll get there

As a useful principle if a finger prick reading seems wrong, wash or rewash your hand (or at least one finger) - then retest. It's surprising how sensitive a test can be - even from soap with excessive alkalinity or acidity, that you might not have rinsed off fully. And dry with a clean towel or a bit of kitchen roll. Regrettably it's all part of the daily hassle for active monitoring of one's BG.

I believe some meters may give a low reading if there's not enough blood in the sample (Mine gives an error.).
What brand is it?

Welcome to the forum @WayneC

Like others I slightly suspect your 2.9 may have been a rogue reading - either a duff strip, or some other glitch?

You would almost certainly have felt very unwell, possibly experiencing symptoms such as - trembling, shaky, anxious, sweating, impaired vision, ravenous, or weak.

Always worth rechecking a BG result that doesn’t match how you feel. 🙂
