Just joined through a link in a booklet I was given by a new group held at my local medical centre, so thought I’d introduce myself…
I was diagnosed T2 in March actually after getting my BP tested ( very high). It all went a bit downhill from there. I’ve also got a lower back and hip issue.
I’ve joined a few FB groups, read up quite a bit, joined the surgery group, and joined here.
I would say that firstly due to putting a lot of weight on ( and putting everything down to Menopause), I have completed changed my lifestyle within the last year, but it’s been at a slower pace but more manageable.
So, I do 30 mins Smart weighted hooping ( not typo of ‘boobing’) every morning, ( also started a FB group to support and keep motivated doing this, and now have over 1,000 members ).
I’ve cut out all crappy snacks, and if I fancy anything eat a few lentil crisps or almonds and nuts.
I don’t smoke, only drink ( a Bloody Mary), at the weekends ( unless I’m having a couple of cocktails once a month or more if we eat out), do my moderate exercise for 30 mins daily, and try to drink over one litre of water a day.
I only eat a few potatoes once a week, changed to wholewheat pasta ( small hand sized portion) if I make an spag Bol, and a little frozen and re- heated rice if I make a homemade chilli. I use leaner Turkey mince instead of red meat, and keep an eye on my carbs and sugars,( however I do treat myself to a skinny dream bar for my dessert).
So I guess what I’m saying is, I’m trying to see this as a marathon rather than a sprint. I’m not totally perfect but I’m happy so far with what I’m doing, and from an HbA1c of 52 I’m now at 45,( was 44 but just got back from holiday).
So, as I’ve been reading through the leaflets and booklets we were given last evening at the meeting, I thought I’d join here too and say ‘Hello’

Hi @MichR , welcome to the forum!

It's great to hear you're thinking of this as a 'marathon rather than a sprint' - that's a good mentality to have, and it certainly seems as though you are making lots of tweaks and changes that will be making a difference!

How are you finding the changes so far? And are you finding the meetings helpful for learning more about type 2?

I've never heard of 'weighted booping', sounds intriguing! I really hope it's something you're enjoying keeping up, and well done for keeping motivated!

Should you wish to learn a bit more about going through menopause and diabetes, you are welcome to take a look are our article here - https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/life-with-diabetes/menopause

As well as this, there are lots of resources around diet on our website - https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/enjoy-food/eating-with-diabetes/i-have-type-2-diabetes

It appears that you've got lots of lovely recipes in the bank, but should you ever wish to try any Diabetes UK recipes, we have a recipe search tool here too - https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/recipes

If there is anything you would like to know or ask, we're a friendly bunch and always happy to help with any questions - please do ask away! 🙂

Thank you Ciara for replying….
No I haven’t heard of weighted booping either! ‍♀. It’s a typo and should read ‘hooping’, but my predictive text likes to play tricks on me at the last minute! I can’t seem to be able to edit the whole post ( only the title).
I do sometimes find it a bit of a chore, but it’s become a good habit now and I have to do it every day. It’s great as well, because after the initial outlay for a hoop you can do it in the comfort of your own home, so if you can’t walk well ( like myself), or have other issues, you don’t have to worry about the weather or going to a gym, and you can fit it in to your daily routine. I listen to my Spotify playlist while I hoop.
The changes I’ve made so far have been good because to me they haven’t been too drastic as I’ve made changes slowly that I have found manageable.
It was the group’s first meeting last evening, and we’ve got six more to go, every Wednesday evening. Next week is BP monitoring.
Thank you too for the links, I’ll certainly have a look at them.

Welcome to the forum @MichR

Glad you have found us!

Sounds like you’ve made a lot of positive changes, and well done for the exercise you are adding in.

Good to see your HbA1c has come down too 🙂
