Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I'm Christo O'Mongain (pronounced O Mangan), diagnosed with Type 2. I'm 77 years old so no surprise I suppose.
I'm changing my diet but I find it hard to know what to eat. Vegetarians and Vegans are well looked after at the supermarkets but there is no Diabetes section so I don't know what to buy.
I'd appreciate some guidance, please. I know about vegetables but what meat substitute should I eat?

I have always been a meat (beef and lamb mainly) eater. I will eat chicken if it is dressed otherwise I find chicken rather dry. I'd appreciate knowing what is suitable for dressing chicken. I don't eat fish at all.

Interesting idea that Diabetic Section. I find it useful and convenient to shop online, you then have all the information at your fingertips.

Welcome to the forum. It might help if you explain why you want to substitute meat?

Meat, fish, eggs, cheese all contain no carbohydrate and so won’t raise your blood sugar. If you’re vegetarian or vegan then how about substituting with things like tofu, beans, pulses, or if you like it then the vegetarian meat substitutes in the supermarket?

Steak or lamb don’t contain carbohydrate so won’t affect your blood sugar. If you’re watching your red meat intake for other reasons then perhaps watch how often you eat it.

Watch the portion size of the pasta as it’s all carbohydrate and will raise your blood sugar. Maybe start with half the portion you used to have and extra veg/protein with it

It is the high carb foods you need to be reducing your intake of so things like bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, breakfast cereals, pastry, tropical fruits as well as the obvious cakes, biscuits and sugary drinks including fruit juice,
All meat is low carb but prepared sauces are best treated with caution. For seasonings rubs and pastes or fresh herbs, lemon, ginger, garlic are all OK.

Ok, that’s what confused me. You can still eat meat with diabetes 🙂 It’s the carbohydrates you need to watch - bread, potatoes, pasta, cereal, rice, flour, sugar, biscuits, etc etc. It’s those that affect your blood sugar so reducing them will help.

Chicken you could have with a small amount of gravy, or in a casserole like Coq au Vin with red wine, or cold with a dressing made of Greek yoghurt with a squeeze of lemon juice and salt and pepper, or mayo. Anything that’s not too carby.
