Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi. I’m new to the forum, although diagnosed with type 2 about 15 years ago & have dipped into the Diabetes UK website quite often since then (particularly for link to decent travel insurance). My blood sugars have not been well controlled over the last few years (poor diet choices, linked to work & lifestyle but also avoidance); however, I have recently had results showing some impact on eyes & kidney function, as well as problems with my feet. I‘ve had a diabetes review & had dapaglifozin added to my meds & advice from the practice nurse to use the Diabetes UK low carb meal planner. I can’t afford to risk my sight as I rely on my car to get to work & am also the main driver when travelling with my wife. I am finding the meal planner & recipes useful & hope to be able to get on a better track in managing my condition, before it’s too late. It helps that my wife is supportive & as we both need to lose weight we are planning meals for both of us to eat - she has already created a spread sheet to help us monitor carb intake! Debbie B

Welcome to the forum @Debbie B

Sorry to hear you’ve had some changes to your eyes and kidney function - but congratulations on the way you have responded to it! Thankfully diabetes is generally a fairly slow-moving foe, and hopefully the regular checks you should get as part of your diabetes care will mean that these have been caught early, and that you have every chance of slowing progress.

If the changes to your eyes are noted as ‘background’ then the letter may have been quite scary, but many members on the forum (including me) have received notification of background changes only to be able to return to ’all clear’ by improving blood glucose management.

Great to hear that you’ve been finding the low carb meal planner on the main site helpful. We have lots of members here who use low or moderately low carb menus as a main component of their diabetes management efforts. The NHS Freshwell surgery also often gets mentioned as a useful resource.

Great to hear you and your wife are hoping to use the same menu. Hope you find it suits you, and that it helps with your weight loss goals 🙂

To help you along the route to making some good food choices than getting a home blood glucose monitor if you haven't already got one would give you the tools to check out if your meals and food is suitable and you are able to tolerate the amount of carbohydrates. The GlucoNavii or Spirit TEE2 are ones which have cheaper strips.
Testing before you eat and after 2 hours will give you an idea if your meal has been OK if the increase is no more than 2-3mmol/l or as levels come down no more than 8-8.5 2 hrs post meal. If it is you can make some adjustments by cutting out or reducing portion size of any high carb foods.
