Hi Diabetes with insulin is a new area for me. I have complex chronic health conditions I’m dependent on nurses all day everyday. Despite this I am at home and trying to make the most of my life. I am trying to navigate this minefield of becoming an insulin dependent diabetic and looking for support/friends

Welcome to the forum @Donna_2022/19

Sounds like you have quite a lot on your plate, so you are to be commended for your can-do attitude.

Do you know which insulin(s) you will be using? And when is your start day?

Have you been living with diabetes for long?

Hi thank you! So I’ve been on insulin for ten months we started on humalog mix 50 twice a day, this was then increased to three times a day. Just over a week ago I’ve been switched to Treseba 28 units once a day and fast acting Humalog on a sliding scale which I’m struggling with to be honest and blood sugars seem worse. I’ve been on and off diabetic for many years as I went through episodes of severe hypoglycaemia where all medications were stopped and I could be fine for a year or so. No insulin needed. But then I got Covid and my blood sugars went wild and we couldn’t gain any control so had to go on insulin.

It can often take a while to settle into a new insulin regimen, and it sounds like your body sometimes likes to throw a spanner in the works too!

Have you had much guidance about matching insulin doses to the food you are eating? Although meant for T1, I wonder whether you could adapt the principles in BERTIE (www.bertieonline.org.uk) or Gary Scheiner’s book Think Like A Pancreas might have some helpful suggestions to offer?
