Hi,

Dean here, i'm a newbie. Recently (1 week) diagnosed with diabetes and still undergoing further tests to determine possible underlying cause.

Hope to gain some valuable knowledge from the forums in the very near future!

Welcome to the forum
Diagnosis is always a shock and hopefully the tests will reveal something but in the meantime have you been given any medication or dietary advice. Is it that they are not sure if you are Type 2 or Type 1.
How did you come to be diagnosed, have you lost weight quickly perchance. Sorry if that sounds like a lot of questions but it does help people to make tailored comments.
Please ask any question you may have but have a look at the Learning Zone as there is a lot of information and having a better understanding will help you.
This link may give you some ideas for meal options with some do's and don'ts. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/

Hi! Thank you.

It was a shock, i only went to the Doctors for a nearly 40 MOT and found all this out.

Yes, they're unsure of Type, treating like it's type 2 at the moment and on medication but due to healthy lifestyle and not being overly overweight, they're checking all potential issues. Due a liver ultrasound soon, hopefully and further liver blood tests.

My HbA1c was 132.

I am surprised you were not experiencing some symptoms, thirst, frequent loo visits, blurry vision, with an HbA1C so high, the diagnostic level would be 48mmol/mol so you are in the upper echelons.
What medication have they put you on? Have you been given a blood glucose monitor to test at home as with levels so high it would be wise to keep a daily watch on your levels. Also it is a good idea to be able to check for ketones in your urine as with that high level of blood glucose that is a possibility and can be a dangerous situation.

Yes, i have a Freestyle Libre 2 fitted so can scan as and when i want to check my levels. They didn't mention about checking my ketones but i have read about that, can i buy my own testing things for that? I'm on Metformin and Gliclazide at the moment.

You can buy ketone urine test strips from the pharmacy, not expensive.
You sound fairly clued up. Gliclazide is a medication that can cause low blood glucose so you should test before driving, I not sure if Libre readings count or if it is only a finger prick test.

Thanks for the information, i'll look in to the Ketones testing. 🙂

Welcome to the forum @diabeticdeano

Sorry you had this landed on your plate out of the blue :(

Hopefully you will get some clarity about your diabetes type soon. I expect they have have taken GAD antibody and possibly cPeptide checks. These can take a while to come back, as there aren’t that many labs in the UK that offer them.

Type 1 is autoimmune, so spotting the antibodies close to diagnosis can help give a clue. The cPeptide measures how much ‘home grown’ insulin you are able to produce - you’d expect a higher value with insulin resistance / T2, and a lower value where beta cells have been lost to autoimmune attack.

Let us know what you find out, and how you get on 🙂
