Ha! That’s hilarious!

Welcome to the forum @SurreyFifties

Sounds like you are off to a great start, and congratulations on the weight loss 🙂
Thank you, this is a great resource, glad I joined.

I can’t take too much praise for losing weight, it was partly a very difficult first month on metformin (!) and now low carb just sees the weight coming off even though I’m never hungry.

Thank you, that’s interesting regarding eyes. At the DESMOND course they said I had to have a minimum of 130g of carbs, this would push my bg sky high. I’ll look at the symptoms for eyes on here. I imagine I’m getting about 80g counting yogurts, fruit, vegetables, milk etc
hey. don't worry about the desmond advice on carbs. Sorry edit: Try to moderate carbs. I find if I have more than 70g of carbs a day my weight and bg goes up. If you get a BloodGlucose tester (the one many of us have is gluco navi, i got mine frome home health uk), and then test test test to see what foods spike you or you can tolerate. The diabetes UK site says how to do it.

I've just spotted you said your DESMOND course said a minimum of 130gm carbs per day. Are you sure that's what they said, as it's usually suggested 130gm as a maximum? Perhaps some others on the Forum would like to chip in?
i can't get on a desmond course but I feel that you may be onto something Felinia, that looks right what you said? but who knows! I can't eat more than 70g a day of carb myself now.

Well done on your weight loss @SurreyFifties 🙂 And for sorting out your IBS.
For me, carbs (especially bread) are the food of the devil!
You may well be surprised (and pleased!) at your next review. Keep up the good work and let us know how you get on.
Hello Vonny - you've done wonderfully well to get to where you are today, very, very well done! You've given me hope of pulling things round, thank you!

Chipping in! Yes, the official advice from HCPs was a minimum of 130g carbs a day, not that many years ago, and it seems it still persists in some quarters. Apparently your brain needs 130g of glucose a day to function, and glucose could only come from carbs was the line then. That's one reason why low carb diets were frowned on.

I was given the option to go on a Desmond course around 9 months ago, shortly after I was diagnosed. Since then I've lost weight, metabolic syndrome has reversed and hba1c has been good for that period of time... I somehow don't think I'll get on it, and it sounds like I won't agree with it!

Personally I am not a fan of sweeteners including erythitol, steviol, etc and certainly non of the little sweetener pills you can get. I find that fruit can add a sweetness well if I need it but my palette has changed so that I no longer need sweetness like I used to (or my perception of the sweetness of foods has changed)

Many years ago when my daughter was a wee thing we came across mangetout, which was immediately pronouced 'man-get-out' and has been called that ever since. 🙂
I use xylitol but it is toxic to cats and dogs and I have a cat so am trying to be very careful.
