Hi I’m Chris, just joined the forum. Had diabetes for a short while, Still trying to get my head around what I can and can’t eat. Plus all the other stuff that goes with having type 2.
 
Hi @Turbo73 and welcome to the forum.
Type 2 diabetes is basically insulin resistance, which means that your body is unable to remove all the excess glucose (sugar) from the blood. So the body responds by producing more and more insulin which as well as safely storing blood glucose as fat (i.e. making you fatter) when it gets stored in and around your organs makes your insulin resistance worse.

The type of food which converts into glucose when digested is mainly carbohydrates (both sugars and starches). Protein can also be converted into glucose, but usually only when there is no/little carbohydrate in the diet.

So the best treatment for Type 2 D is simply to reduce the amount of carbs eaten. But unfortunately in this age of 'a pill for every ill', doctors often ignore this simple lifestyle fix and prescribe medication instead. This is why Type 2 is commonly thought of as being a progressive disease with no cure.

So as long as you aren't on a blood glucose lowering drug stronger than metformin, a Low Carbohydrate 'way of eating' is both safe and will probably reverse your T2D.
 
Unfortunately we have been told that lots of fruit and veg is good and that we should eat lots of whole grains rather than meat or eggs or cheese. But there are only 3 macro-nutrients of which only protein and fat are essential, so don't fear fat - it won't make you fat unless you eat it alongside carbs. Fat helps keep you fuller for longer and traditional fats have been wrongly maligned.

When for a Type 2 Diabetic, the reverse is true. Meat, fish, eggs, cheese, full fat dairy is good for us and will make us slimmer unless accompanied by carbohydrates. And tropical fruit, fruit juice , dried fruit and starchy veg like carrot and parsnip are best severely reduced or cut out completely.

A typical modern breakfast is terrible for a Type 2 diabetic because bread, breakfast cereals (even porridge) and fruit juice or tropical fruit such as a banana are just what we shouldn't be eating!
Instead eggs (cooked any way), bacon, cold meat or fish, cheese, full fat Greek yogurt are much better. You can add berries, seed and/or tree nuts (not cashews) to the yogurt. Berries and black/red currants are amongst the lowest carb fruit, along with things like watermelon and rhubarb (which is really a vegetable).
 
Good evening, thanks for the information. You’ve certainly made things clearer to me. Like anything new you can search and search and get so many different answers. Nothing like 1st hand knowledge.
