Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello!

So on Wednesday, I had a ring from the nurse from our local GP practice. I have type 2 diabetes. My wife, who is in the medical field thought as much as I had been peeing more at night and was itching in certain places. I'm obese but enjoy working out and walking my dog. I'm actually fairly calm about it and have started medication already (Metformin) with breakfast. I can change my lifestyle and hopefully be a bit healthier.....

Hi 🙂 yes, changing our lifestyles can help us all. Let us know if you have any questions.

Welcome to the forum. Your symptoms are often what sends people to the doctor and leads to a diabetes diagnosis but it gives the opportunity to take some action to change things for the better. If you know what your HbA1C is that will indicate how much work you need to do, although having been put on metformin I assume you are well into the diabetic zone as often people are given the opportunity to try lifestyle changes initially if not too far into the zone.
However dietary changes are the most powerful thing you can do.
This link may help you with some ideas for modifying your diet, it is a low carb approach which many have found successful in both reducing blood glucose level and losing weight. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/

Welcome to the forum @amancalledalex

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but it sounds like you may have caught it fairly early, rather than putting off investigating the cause if your symptoms for a long time.

Good to hear that you are already active, and dog walking is a great option, because (rather like having a gym/workout buddy) it makes it harder to put off going because of those big-saucer-eyes and sense of expectation/excitement from your four-footed friend!

Hopefully you can find a way of eating that helps you manage your raised blood glucose levels, alongside the Metformin you are taking.

There are a number of different approaches including moderate or low carbohydrate meal plans, and low calorie approaches.

Your diabetes will be as individual as you are, so it’s really a matter of finding out what works for you, and adjusting any suggestions to create a plan that is workable and sustainable for you 🙂
